Unlike far too many DUers, I like Mellencamp's music. I think of him as the poor man's Springsteen. And I'm pretty damned poor!

15. That's what I was wondering
(Ducking 'cause this will upset people, but I can't help myself...)

Why go for Mellencamp when you can have the real thing?

OK, he sucked as John Cougar, but...
...that was because he had no creative autonomy over his music. Once his label backed the fuck off and let Mellencamp be Mellencamp, he got real good real fast!

"R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A!" :headbang:

9. Scarecrow was one of the great albums of the '80s
The production was fantastic - listen to the drums on that album. It was unified in theme (the family farm) and was anti-Reagan to boot!

17. Well, James Brown did endorse Nixon in 1972.
I still love the man's music, though! Brown's, I mean. :silly:

19. "Pink Houses" would've been good, too, but...
...I'm guessing the DNC considered it too "cynical" for the message of hope they wish to convey.

14. I like Mellencamps music, too....
.....always have. I think he is a Midwestern version of Springsteen, though hes not copying Bruce.

Mellencamps had some great tunes.....Pink Houses, Cherry Bomb, etc. And hes also been an activist around rural issues.....the town he comes from, Seymour, Indiana, is pretty blue collar, too.

It was a great performance, and I like that line he threw in: "My wife was 13 when I wrote this song."
