Question about Palast's Florida 2000 investigation. |
|
Palast claimed that about 50,000 or so were disenfranchised and later he claimed that Gore lost 20,000 votes due to the voter rolls being scrubed.
Ok, so has anyone ever attempted to compile a list of people that were actually registered correctly, misidentified as a felon, and thus lost their ability to vote on election day? When these people went to the polls were they told they could not vote or were they allowed to vote, but later their ballot was not counted unbeknownst to them? Any help is appreciated.

Is there a definite list or number of people that were not allowed to vote? There are many skeptics that won't buy it because they've only seen about three of these alleged disenfranchised voters.

8. Maybe you don't know Greg Palast. If he says he has the list... |
|
...then you can go to the bank on that one.

9. There are pictures of some of the voter rolls |
|
Where it shows that blacks with a particular name were taken off, and whites were left on.
There was also someone taken off the voting rolls for a crime he committed in 2007. Florida invented the idea of the future felon.

The Best Democracy Money Can Buy do so. In it Palast explains in great detail what happened with all those voters.

I don't recall him every showing more than the one page from DBT's list and mentioning a couple of specific instances. I would like to know that there is a list of disenfranchised voters somewhere, because the "OK, show me the list" argument is a pretty difficult one to counter.

There's a chapter on first-hand accounts that tells a bunch of stories, but it isn't a comprehensive list. http://www.usccr.gov/pubs/vote2000/report/main.htm

7. From their conclusions... |
|
During Florida’s 2000 presidential election, restrictive statutory provisions, wide-ranging errors, and inadequate resources in the Florida election process denied countless Floridians of their right to vote.
This disenfranchisement of Florida voters fell most harshly on the shoulders of African Americans. Statewide, based on county-level statistical estimates, African American voters were nearly 10 times more likely than white voters to have their ballots rejected in the November 2000 election.<5>
Poorer counties, particularly those with large minority populations, were more likely to use voting systems with higher spoilage rates than more affluent counties with significant white populations. For example, in Gadsden County, the only county in the state with an African American majority, approximately one in eight voters was disenfranchised. In Leon County, on the other hand, which is home to the prosperous state capital and two state universities, fewer than two votes in 1,000 were not counted.
In Florida, of the 100 precincts with the highest numbers of disqualified ballots, 83 of them are majority-black precincts. Even in counties where the same voting technology was used, blacks were far more likely to have their votes rejected than whites.

10. That's something, anyway. |

It's a great book but it did lack in that regard. Didn't the ACLU bring a case? Maybe they have a list.

but here's something showing examples of Floridians who were wrongly identified as felons and were removed from rolls: http://www.gregpalast.com/detail.cfm?artid=122&row=2I remember when this was published in Harper's...I don't recall seeing it at in the corporate-owned media (surprise surprise).
