CHICAGO -- A federal judge assigned to oversee independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader lawsuit against members of the Illinois State Board of Elections has asked to be relieved from the case because he signed a Nader petition.
The State Board of Elections has called into question 19,000 of the 32,500 signatures on Nader's petitions, disqualifying him from being on the 2004 General Election ballot.
On Tuesday, federal district Judge Mark R. Filip admitted that while he was attending a Cubs game this summer, he signed one of Nader’s petitions. The judge, appointed by Republicans to his current post, has asked to be relieved from the case.
