I can't remember the last convention I saw before tonight's last two hours of the Dem convention with its build up to Kerry's entrance and his acceptance speech.

Unrecognizable. A completely different event and function this year, a state-of-the-art campaign music video with a very diverse range of interspersed testimonials instead of the old style rambling convention.

The prime image being sold is Kerry saluting and "reporting for duty" to rescue us from the Republicans and their disastrous misleadership into another Vietnam.

Brilliant. It works. Frames the contrast with AWOL boy who is reportedly too medicated, depressive and erratic to function lately and not likely to survive any debates.

Kerry crammed a one hour speech into much less time and finished with time for the balloon drop to be seen on primetime network TV to prove that Dems could be disciplined and organized. His rushing eventually got him out of his usual stentorian style and put previously missing passion into his flawless delivery.

The multi-screen visuals were slick for every second with music segments used to regulate the emotional rhythm from earnest to upbeat like a movie plot.

-More flags and honored vets than the Repubs can hope for.
-Women featured on camera constantly along with people of color.
-Kerry portrayed as two heroes-the war hero AND the truth-teller.
-Earnest and relentless deification from soldiers, generals, clerics, police, firefighters, teachers, rodeo clowns etc.
-Kerry's and Theresa's grown kids articulately testifying at length to his integrity. Can you imagine the Bush twins looking that respectable?
-The daughter's story of dad rescuing the sinking caged hampster from the water with an oar during a vacation mishap mirrored the buddy rescue on the fast boat in Vietnam thereby cogently depicting Kerry as a heroic rescuer and family man in one fell swoop. Brilliant again.


By successfully taking back both the flag and the family values issue he conveyed the qualities of the strong protective father that fearful populations turn to in dire times.

Whoever wrote this evening's script did one hell of a job. Mission accomplished indeed.
