The 'Ten Friends' challenge: A Challenge To All Of You
Now that the Convention is over, I have a simple challenge for everyone here.

It's called the Ten Friends Challenge

Find ten friends or acquaintences that are on the fence or don't normally vote.

Sell them on Kerry.

Get their asses to the polls! Especially if you live in a swing state or a heavily Democratic area. Bring out the support of the base!

Just think - If all of us can find at least ten people or more to vote for Dems in November, this could make a big difference.

1. It's the best thing we can do
along with VOTER REGISTRATION!

I'll be spending all of election day driving people from heavily Democratic areas to the polls.

4. Is that true? I think every state has its own rules on
registering to vote. Check with county or state boards of election.

5. You may be right
It does act for state or zip code.

Worth a try.

Otherwise, check into local regulations.

13. Better yet...
in addition to driving folks to the polls on 11-2, how about organizing a mass absentee voting campaign as well?! Not only would that ensure a paper trail, it also buys more time to get more people to vote.

11. Even better
It's a college town.

Here's what gave me the idea:

Michael Moore: 96% black precinct in Cleveland with 13% voter turnout

This is unbelievable!

He mantioned this in a speech in Boston the other day. The transcript can be found here:

http://www.michaelmoore.com/words/index.php?id=113

This is one of the most interesting parts:

I went to one of these meeting of ACT, I forget what it stands for. America coming together, one, two, and they put up on the screen a map of Cleveland, Ohio and they showed a precinct in Cleveland that was 96% African American. 96%. Total vote are turnout in 2000, 13%. You can't get more base of the Democratic Party than African Americans and if you don't have a message that will inspire them to come out on Election Day and tells them with no B.S. and shows them how their life will be better, we will not win this election. That will not happen. (applause) I say this not to rain on the party. We are all in this together. And as they said last night, we have a big tent. And all of us, from conservative democrats to greens who are voting democrat, are all in this tent right now for one common goal. That's to get our white house back in our hands, the majority's.

The most obvious place to start is the base.

18. You'll find plenty of Goopers and fence-sitters just a few miles away...
in Ypsitucky, Dexter, Saline, and so on. All you need is a car and a strong will.

12. And I might add this
I don't care WHERE you live, do it. If those of us in the red states can do it, ANYONE can do it!

I accept this challenge. I've already probably gotten at least 20 people to vote for Kerry in the past six months who wouldn't have voted normally but I'll get as many more as I can.

I'm a deputy voter registrar!!! Wheeee!!!!

15. I see your ten friends and up you 25 employees
Today my husband and I are giving our employees the afternoon off, with pay so that they can go register to vote. They don't have to but we are strongly encouraging that they do. If they are already registered, great then go have some fun for the rest of the day.

Then for election day, we are shutting down and everyone is getting the day off with pay. Again, I am strongly encouraging them to go vote and hopefully having the day off will make it even easier.

16. That's terriffic!
Every company should shut down on Election Day.

Perhaps this will improve voter turnout.

I missed the 1996 election because I had a job working all day long. And I mean all day long! Luckily, I was going to vote for Clinton anyway, and I was in a strong blue state.

17. Yes, Register, Register, Register...
Time is tight...states begin to close their registrations in many states as early as the end of next month. Many people who've never voted think all they have to do is show up at the polls and not register...even states with a motor voter, the process takes time and always better to have that voters registration card firmly in hand before election day.

We've already hosted on party of young people...first time voters...took them to the local village hall, registered them and then had a huge pizza party. We're hoping to organize at least one if not two more of these.

We gain two votes on the regime whenever we gain a first time voter...and you'd be surprised how happy people are that you took the time and interest in helping them register.
