Never was into politics until now...
Thanks to Kerry and Edwards and their powerful voices, I now know why I chose when I was a youngster why I considered myself a Democrat. I never was into politics and never paid attention to it. But after all the crud that has been going on during Shrub-ya's administation, I felt that I needed to get more active in politics and DO SOMETHING to stop this administration from succeeding in another term.

This year will be the first time in my life that I will vote for a future president. My vote will go to Kerry this year and hopefully towards another term after he serves his first four years! I'M CONFIDENT! I'M DETERMINED TO DO ALL I CAN TO GET KERRY AND EDWARDS IN OFFICE AND TAKE BACK OUR COUNTRY!!!!

Wow, I've never been this fired up...nor have I ever been involved in politics and so interested in politics until now...and I'm 23 years old. I'm proud that my very first vote for president will be for a man like John Kerry.

1. Congratulations
and welcome to DU.

It's not just vitally important to care about politics, it's a helluva lot of fun, too. Politics is an endlessly interesting field.

Glad to have you on DU and in our party.

4. That's wonderful!
I'm ashamed to say I was in my 30's before I started paying attention to politics. You'll have lots of time to make your mark!

Welcomce to DU, I'm sure you will like it here. :hi:

19. Grasp as much of this feeling as you can now,
because I'm 61 and this is only the second time I will actually be voting FOR someone and not against (well, quite a bit really); my other for vote was John Kennedy - that was a very long dry spell.

7. Hi asianjoanne!
:hi: :hi: :hi:

Welcome to DU!

:toast:

I was at a party for a Senatorial candidate I'm volunteering for, and met an older Japanese woman. I live around a lot of Japanese people, so I was well aware that they are mostly not very much into politics, and when they are, they are usually conservative.

She is so fired up about our candidate, and was asking me a lot of questions about how to talk with people about him. to make a long story short, by the time she left, I had her outfitted with two yard signs (she lives on a corner!), a tee shirt, some buttons, a hat and a bunch of literature. We're going to work an event together this weekend, and next week she and I will banner at a high foot-traffic area, and hand out literature.

Although she's almost retirement age, this is her first campaign. :) So, you're definitely not alone. I handed her a bumper sticker, and she said she doesn't like to have stickers, and hasn't ever before, but this time it was important enough to her..... "My first bumpersticker!", said she, with a big smile. :)

It will take a while to get into the swing of things, but just attach yourself to some good people in the campaign you're working on, listen and watch, and you'll soon get the hang of it, and you'll find your particular nitch.

Thanks for your efforts, and have fun!

:hi:

13. Yes, I knew you were Chinese..... I was responding to the "asian" part of
joanne!

That's a wonderful mix! Sounds Hawaiian! :hi: If so, Aloha!

I just had an email from my new Japanese friend this morning, and she is bringing her 87-year-old mother to the Dragon Boat Festival, where we will be leafletting for our candidate (who is half Japanese). She said, "No true Asian would dare not vote for the candidate an 87-year-old Asian woman is promotting." :) I'm really excited about meeting her mother, too.

Keep us up to date on how your politicking is going. :)

A Filipino isn't hawaiian...don't know where you got the Hawaiian idea from. I said nothing about being Hawaiian. Blah, I'm giving up. :p

20. There was no slur there at all.......

There are many people in Hawaiian who are a mix like that. That's why I asked.

There are many Filipinos in Hawai'i, and many have intermarried with Chinese and other ethnic groups.

Sorry it grabbed you the wrong way.

Good luck to you.

9. Congratulations, politics is better than any reality show
It is the most important and interesting thing in the world. Learning to make the world a better place is our purpose for living. When you know that you are doing the right thing, no matter what, you are light on your feet, you are lifted up and we all can feel it now.

10. ONe more thought.......
At the risk of sounding like some Pollyanna, one good thing has come out of this bushwa mess, and that's good people like you realizing that we can't take this nation for granted -- that it takes work. I think your story is repeated many times over, and that's a *really* good thing.

Just remember, if we get Kerry in office, that isn't the end of it........ we can't get complacent, ever again. The dragon is always waiting at the door. We must keep working for a better country -- for *ALL* our citizens!

14. Welcome to DU! Delighted to see your newborn activism!
I'm noticing a trend, too, that's worth bragging about. From Teresa Heinz Kerry to you - Democratic women are GORGEOUS! And I'm NOT just talking exteriors. Or maybe that's because of the HUGE smiles that are splitting our faces wide open...

I'm 51. I've been fired up for awhile, but I haven't really been ANGRILY fired up since, probably, the newt gingrich "backbench bombthrower" crap and the deterioration of our national dialogue (promoted by people like him, and all the limbaugh-wannabes out there) that really got rolling with the persecution of Bill Clinton. I've been pretty much on rolling-boil setting since then. DELIGHTED to see you join the group! You are stepping up at EXACTLY the perfect time - with this particular election being the MOST critical election in our history.

By the way, when you sink, a little, or the reptiles of the wrong-wing start getting to you, you can find a made-in-Heaven refuge here. DU is my oasis. If you come here, you will NO LONGER feel alone. But, I suspect you'll be noticing that you have lots of company - more and more.

you are in for one bumpy ride. Nothing like politics that can get the roller coaster of emotions going.

I'm about twice your age and I didn't pay much attention until That Thing slimed into DC in 2000.

and I'm not even American. heh.
