Edwards' was better. Carter's was better. Clinton's was better. Obama was good, but the best? He is the new guy and he has to grow into this. Why do people want to put the expectations at an unreachable level for him?
He's one to watch that's for sure.

5. I respect your opinion but I thought Barack Obama was also |
|
the best hands down. Did you hear why Mario Cuomo thought it was?

6. No, I didn't hear what Mario said... |
|
But I heard most of the speeches myself. And my opinion is that Obama gave a great speech for someone 99% of Americans have no idea who in the hell he is. They will expect to see him more and be more.
But Edward's speech was filled with more charm, calm dignity, optimism and a reminder of JFK days. He will get Kerry more votes than Obama will.

which makes Kerry the grand finale of ingenious wording, delivery and effect. There was no contest but a progression like a concert of different skilled artists, totally overwhelming any complaint about rigid programming.
Unless you are a tone deaf GOP pundit.

I would rate them (and I not counting what I did not see):
1. Obama 2. B. Clinton 3. Sharpton (I give the man his props) 4. Cleland 5. Edwards 6. Carter 7. Kerry 8. Gore 9. Heinz-Kerry 10. Kennedy 11. H. Clinton
I actually found Edwards to be a little disappointing. Still a very good speech, but you could tell that he is inexperienced in working a room that large.

8. I think Clinton was terrific but I thought Sharpton was a tad better. |
|
In the 80's I had very little respect for Sharpton. He made a mistake and has grown up since.
Kerry & Cleland were also tops. And I agree with 'ya on Edwards. It was good but could have been better.

10. Kerry is simply limited as a speaker |
|
I know it's become a cliche by now, but 20 years in the Senate destroys your oratory skills. Everything becomes filled with an artificial pomposity (Robert Byrd being the exception that proves the rule, but he is from a different era and different tradition). I just imagine Senators talking to their wives on a Saturday in this manner:
"And now (dramatic pause), I am off to the market. To buy a quart of milk. And some bread. Then . . . I must. Pick up. The drycleaning."

12. Nope. Kerry's was. Obama was the emotion, Kerry was the meat. |
|
They worked as a team, like the riders on Armstrong's team. Armstrong, like Kerry, came out on top, but Armstrong couldn't win w/o his team. Obama is a terrific team player on Kerry's team.
