2. You need to be careful

Fred Phelps is crazy. I live in KC, about 80 miles from Topeka, where his church is. The man is a lunatic. He's so bad the local media leave him alone. Do an internet search and you'll see what I mean.

He writes down license plate numbers of folks who drive by and stare at him and then he bombards them with phone calls, faxes and emails.

The Topeka city govt has been trying to get rid of him for 10 or 15 years now and they finally decided to ignore him. That would be my advice as well.

He's a preacher and an attorney and is too smart for his own good.

I know these people, I live in Topeka and went to school with his kids from kindergarten through college. They are disgusting but as someone else said, free speech protects them. We live with this daily in some part of our town. I actually think that they have done some good, people are more tolerant because of the hate they spew. I have no real reason to feel this way but as far as I know we do not have anti gay hate crimes occuring and I know businesses who say their business goes up if he pickets them.

12. I've had some fun with the Phelps people over the years

They showed up at my brother's law school graduation from the University of Kansas - they protest there each year because Phelps got his law degree there, and I guess he blames them for his getting disbarred. I pulled into the parking lot and saw them (and their signs - Kansas Gayhawks) and explained to my mom who they were. She thought they were stupid. I couldn't come up with anything to do or say when we walked by them into the building. Halfway through the ceremony I smacked my head, and my mom asked me what that was for, and I told her, "I should have pinched one of the protester's butts when we walked in to see what would have happened!"

They later came to Tulsa in the late 90s to protest a gay pride parade. They were given one corner of the park to protest in, and I got across from them in a parking lot and displayed two signs, "God Is Love" and "Fred Phelps Is a Wanker." Fortunately I was bigger than any of the guys protesting, and they had second thoughts about coming over (a couple of them started to while giving me the hairy eyeball) after I pulled out three torches, lit them on fire, and started juggling. My plan was to take attention away from them to piss them off. It worked.

I ran into Phelps' grandson in the politics chatroom on Undernet. He had been there for an hour driving everyone crazy because all he wanted to talk about were gays. Some people I knew private messaged me to do something (I had a reputation) so I asked him if he thought AIDS was God's scourge on gays. Of course, it was. I asked him if he knew that the infection rate of lesbians was one of the lowest rates of any demographic group. He actually admitted to this. I then told him by his own logic, God must really, really like lesbians since he's not "punishing" them. He started calling me a blasphemer, etc. I finished up by asking him, "So since God really likes lesbians, do you think this is further proof that He is in fact a male since all the guys I know like the idea of lesbians?" He "screamed" at us then fled the channel, which I was then hero of for 5 minutes. ;)

Fortunately, they've never had the opportunity to get my license plate number. :)

That the worst thing you can do these people is to direct attention away from them. Several months ago, someone on this board was talking about their coming to their small town for some reason, and I think he had organized a fair in the park so that all the buildings downtown would be closed - that's where they were going to be, and I suggested having some people dress up like clowns or balloon twist for people who came downtown and direct them to the fair. Who was that? How did that go?

Wherever they go, people distance themselves from these nuts. They used to show up in SW Missouri all the time. The wingnut leaders of the towns, including the town fighting to keep the Christian Ichthus logo on their town seal, didn't want anything to do with them. The best thing to do is ignore them. If that's impossible, then just laugh non-stop in their faces until they leave... they usually do. If it escalates then just walk away. These assholes come to New Orleans every Mardi Gras and boy do they get punished! Not only do gays, drag queens, and drunks screw with them (use your imagination) but they get quite a few insults. Since they are outnumbered 100,000 to 1 it's very hard for them to get their point across. If I'm drunk, I'll stand there for hours telling them, "Hey Knuckle-dragger! Quit fucking your sister!" ... the insults get much worse... it's juvenile but it's sooo much fun! :D
