I am upset--I sent a pro-Kerry
e-mail to a friend who I have known since childhood--as far as I have known, this friend has always been a member of the Democratic party--but they replied to my e-mail with this:

My name (deleted):

Please do not send me any more such trash. I love you and value our friendship but deplore your taste in presidents.

Their name (deleted)

I am just steaming. But kind of stunned too.

When he says that he/she "deplores your taste in presidents", does that mean he would have preferred another Democratic candidate to win or that he/she now prefers *?

6. I sent an e-mail on how great the convention had
gone--and how Kerry was slightly up in the polls (the data taken during the convention--but before his speech). It wasn't really contentious stuff--I feel like I just got slapped across the face.

Could someone else have intercepted it?

It sounds to weird and inconsistent with previous behavior to make sense.

I think you should broach the issue with the friend, they may not have gotten it, may have been someone else.

edit:

My mom, who knows I am a democrat, sent me some pro-Bush spam once when we were fighting, soI refuted it point by point and sent it to EVERYONE on the list of forwards, which was all her dear puke friends, with an identical message that someone sent me this trash, and I was responding to it. She hasn't done that since, but "I deplore your taste in presidents" doesn't even sound like something a fellow dem would say, unless, like others have state, she leans way green.

5. Either they drank the Bush KoolAid, or they're voting for Nader.
You should ask her why she was offended? If she is no longer a Democrat, you should explain you didn't know but are wondering why?

7. I will do that--but first I have to compose myself
a bit. I am not really mad--more like upset, stunned and hurt--so I have to make sure that I don't say something stupid. I have no idea which way she would have gone--to the left--or to the right--(?)

I just have a sick feeling. I hardly want to know.

Eventhough this person is your friend...
In then end his/her political beliefs are none of your business. Sorry if that sounds harsh but that's the way it is...... But it would have been nice had he/she explained that you in a more friendly manner. Write and explain that part to him/her.....

write back and say "Sorry, I thought you were a Democrat or I wouldn't have sent you anything political. Hope you're well." Put it back in his/her lap.

Your friend really shouldn't have taken you to task if you had reason to believe s/he was a Dem.

Edit: DON'T feel bad!!! She was WRONG to write such a snippy reply. She could have explained her new political leanings to you instead of just saying "don't send me trash." You didn't insult her candidate, after all. (And I'm betting her candidate is Bush* because Bush*ies are RUDE.)

12. Thanks for the good advice--
that is a perfect thing to say. I am not thinking clearly at the moment--because it was hurtful--it was just so blunt.

I will send her exactly what you wrote--hopefully that will soothe her if she is upset and she will at least tell me WHY she is so upset. If her feelings have changed--I want to know how and why. Hopefully this will open the lines of communication.

The message hurt so much because it was just so blunt, curt and rude.

17. Exactly! SHE was blunt, curt, and rude -- you were just sharing

info about Kerry because you thought she'd feel the same. No reason for you to feel guilty. She should be ashamed of herself. People get careless and stupid with e-mail sometimes.

21. I agree, a friend also told me they 'liked' the "president"
I said "don't worry, I know what it feels like" . My puke brother was sending me BS, I overwelmed him and he gave up.

10. your reply should be:
Dear (their name)

Obviously you're a Bush supporter, if you are, that in itself is deplorable. I thought you were a Democrat. Love you too.

Take care.

11. If you thought your friend was a Dem
chances are he/she left the party because of the Choice issue...now I know there are many other reason to have left - but I find in most cases long time Dems have gone to the dark side over some misguided religious belief that Dems are baby killers - if this is the case and you find it out do me a favor and ask him or her how he or she feels about Bush killing Iraqi babies - real live have been born babies -

15. really. and the irony of this being the party that whines about the
'nanny state' when the truth is abortion will never ever be legislated out of existence so this whole movement is getting a big gov't nanny to do what they are too lazy to do for themselves, which is adopt the hell out of all the kids in foster care until there are not any unwanted children left in this country.

19. The ones I know who went to the dark side
went "Dennis Miller' after 9/11, or got involved with gun nuts who made that their #1 issue. Fear is a big motivator, and sadly, we aren't the "land of the Free, home of the Brave" anymore. Half are now just a cult of brainwashed, bedwetting pussies who are SURE some dark skinned person is planning their demise as we type!

13. As your friend "Why?"
Either your friend is to the left or right of Kerry, but from the nasty tone of the response sounds like s/he's to the right. Perhaps tell you're friend you're leaning towards Kerry, but want to hear all sides, and see what happens.

18. OK--I just got an e-mail from another
mutual friend--she got the same message (the subject line was Kerry). I am going to get on the phone tomorrow and get to the bottom of this (my friend is on the East Coast--so it is a little late to call).

It is possible that she did a reply to all, and it was not my message that she was referring to (although the message was addressed to me personally)? Or maybe that someone else intercepted it, using her computer...anyway--I am going to get to the bottom of things this weekend--before I go off the handle about it (although that already happened to some extent).

20. now that I am calmer--
something about this just doesn't seem right to me.

I am imagining all kinds of scenarios--perhaps a freeper boyfriend or someone like that with computer access who has a strategy of alienating her "liberal" friends....

gosh--I must be getting paranoid...

25. A good friend of mine ....
A good friend of mine had a right-wing Clinton-hater boyfriend about 6 years ago. During that period, she was very negative about Clinton, though many of her "facts" came from her crazed boyfriend. A couple years ago, she broke up with him after deciding he was a control freak. Now, she tells me how she's trying to convince her mother (who listens to right wing talk radio all the time) to vote for Kerry.

to him/her, but it will make our victory on November 2nd taste that much sweeter. Let's face it, there's a whole lot of stupid going on out there, or the polls wouldn't be so close!

24. When I was a kid...

we were taught not to ask someone "How they voted".

Voting was considered a private mattter, almost like confession.

Anyway... not to preach, you just never know how others around you may think, and while I think it is our job to educate people about WHY they should vote for John Kerry and John Edwards, be prepared that some may not be ready or willing to accept it.

It's sad, because this is the kind of thing that could change a friendship forever.

26. Yikes
well I guess I know how my long-distance friend felt when I sent her a reply after she sent me some Rush Limpballs bullshit. I was pretty curt and asked her to never sent me trash like that again.

Gulp. Must be why I haven't heard anything from her in the last six months.

We weren't that close anyway. And anyone who listens to rush, well......
