1. So what do you think the helmet has come to represent?

2. I always saw it as his gung-ho attitude.
it defined and confined him.

Now everything has changed and he is questioning his life.

3. the scales have been lifted from BDs eyes
and he's about to see a lot of stiff for the first time.

Go Garry Trudeau! You are the BEST!

4. I've been musing about that
BD has always been the conservative Right Wing member of the Doonesbury crew. His football helmet was a distillation of quintessential American cultural values: God, Mom, American flag, apple pie, manly men, blonde wives, you name it.

But his departure for Iraq has destabilized the equation. Boopsie took over the football team and held her ground on ethical issues that good ol' American boys would rather ignore. And now BD returns with a war injury and minus his helmet.

Looks like BD has developed an open mind and may be ready for some serious re-thinking about American values.

Ironic, since it seems Mike Doonesbury has been making the opposite journey into complacent conservatism.

5. interesting observation about Mike
I think it is valid to look beyond BD's transformation and how each of the main characters represents a part of the whole picture.

6. Mike is sposed to rep Trudeau according to GT
but I think he is really meant to be the everyperson observer of the strip and their conglomerated outlook.
