Hypothetical - the chimp wants to shake your hand
A post in LBN recounts a campaign trail incident in which a group of marines were rude to Kerry when he approached them in a restaurant.

What if you were enjoying a restaurant meal when the chimp arrived for a campaign photo op and headed to your table. How do you think you would react with the cameras rolling?

1. I'd politely shake it
and wouldn't let go until I'd given him an ear-full.

3. not sure, especially if i were eating...
on the one hand, the very sight of the man makes me want to hurl, and i've often found myself repulsed by my own thoughts of "boy, i'd like to..."

on the other hand, he's (illegally) occupying the office that deserves respect, so there's that to consider.

i've thought about it in terms of "if i were on a team that won the super bowl, would i go with the team to meet bush?"

not quite sure how to answer that hypothetical.

5. I'd tell him I respectfully disagrees with his policies,
Edited on Sat Jul-31-04 11:45 AM by mark0rama
and that I support John Kerry. I would also ask him to promise to run a more honorable and positive campaign than he has been running.

On edit: I mean I respecfully disagree, not "disagrees", sorry, just because I'd talk to him doesn't mean I'd talk like him!

6. Yes, I'd shake his hand
I'd be very friendly as I engaged him in a discussion of the issues.

By the way, I hope Kerry got the names of the mentioned marines.

When he is elected, he should send them all a nice letter.

28. I Would Shake His Hand
with a vise like grip not giving him the opportunity to let go. Then I would tell him that he is a scum ball liar, a traitor to America. And that he will be judged by his so called god for his Faustian machinations. Then I would go quickly to the rest room to disinfect my hand!

9. I would have to shake his hand.
Then I would try to recall every issue I have ever researched in regard to him. I would start really bring up some issues such as the convoy of death or the prison scandla at Abu. I would go on from there. If he tried to leave and go to another table, I think I would find myself standing on a chair and trying to ask even more questions.

Even if I came across as a wild liberal, maybe the press would report what questions were being ingored and some people may take the time to educate themselves! I can hope, right?

10. It was Edwards who approached the Marines.
And I'd probably act the same way as the Marines acted. I'm not sure what was rude about it. They gave "clipped" answers, according to the article, which probably means they said, "Yes, sir" and "No, sir." Afterwards, when asked by the reporter, they stated their views. They weren't views that we agree with but what was rude about it? Perhaps someone can enlighten me. If they don't support Kerry-Edwards, how were they supposed to behave that would be considered polite?

Edwards happily approached a table of Marines, who didn't look like they wanted to be distracted from their combos. Kerry, who always gravitates toward men and women in uniform, came over and asked the men, "Where are you guys serving?"

Their answers were clipped. Later, the Marines -- none of whom would give his name -- said they were Bush supporters. "He imposed on us and I disagree with him coming over here shaking our hands," one said. "I'm 100 percent against" Kerry, he said. "We support our commander in chief 100 percent."

17. They do whatever their duties call for but I doubt they will support him
personally. I'm just saying that they are as entitled to their opinions as anyone else. Is their actual behavior rude or is the fact that they don't support Kerry for president rude?

15. That wasn't rude?!
They certainly don't have to be Kerry supporters, but they were "imposed" upon by their future commander-in-chief?! They "disagreed with him coming over here and shaking our hands"?! Whatever. But you KNOW they would have bitched if he hadn't engaged them. You can just hear them saying "he doesn't care about us/the military", etc.

18. I get the definite impression reading this article
that the marines were more interested in their burgers than they were in meeting Kerry and Edwards. One stated he felt imposed upon and was "100% against" Kerry. Considering Kerry's military background, and the fact that he may well become their next Commander in Chief, I do maintain they behaved rudely.

36. Those Marines weren't "cornered" by any stretch of the imagination...
...sounds to me like Kerry and Edwards fell into a group of Marines who still believe the propaganda they're fed on a daily basis. I also strongly suspect NONE of them had ever experienced combat in the Middle East. The troops I've talked with that have gotten back from Iraq seem to be a lot more willing to discuss alternatives to the lying bastards that are currently sending them to war.

As a Naval Gunfire Liaison Officer assigned to the Marines at Camp Pendleton, CA, I can tell you that I had the utmost respect for those people. They did their job, they were invariably polite in public, and they NEVER stated their personal opinions in public. And they NEVER gave any answers to the press. Period.

All kidding aside, I probably would shake his hand, and politely tell him I won't vote for him, since I don't like his policies and his negativity.

I'll tell him Kerry speaks for me.

I guess I'm just too nice.

23. here is the difference ...
a) I would leave before he could shake my hand. With most previous republican lawmakers (prior to the GOP congressional leadership that rose in the 1990s) I would shake their hands, and take the opportunity to raise a question or issue - even with someone like Dan Quayle. That is my nature. However, I am so disturbed by Bush and CHeney and the current crew, that my polite nature couldn't do this - so I would leave before being confronted with the situation.

b) I wouldn't later complain about his wanting to shake hands in general - as if it is a personal affront... that is what politicians do, and people can either respond or not, but to complain about it as if it is personal.... geez.

24. Well, I PERSONALLY feel it is rude to approach people
while they are eating in a restaurant.

It would be rude of Bush to do it, it was rude of Kerry / Edwards.

If they come into a restaurant, and people approach THEM, that is entirely different.

So I would have to say, if Bush approached ME, I would say something like, "Mr. Bush, I would be happy to talk to you after I finished my meal."

If Kerry/Edwards came into a restaurant, I would be over there shaking their hands immediately!

I think the difference here is that we'd speak right up and those soldiers went behind his back and disrespected him. They should have just told him what they thought to his face, they probably would have been shocked that he wouldn't have them reprimanded for speaking their minds.
