Who were Carter's opponents in the '76 primaries? |
|
Also, I would have preferred Dukakis to win in '88 (remember, Poppy did win in an Elway-esque comeback). Granted, we probably wouldn't have had Clinton, but imagine setting the stage for Wellstone to run in '96!

8. I WILL BE FUHRER ONE DAY, I WILL COMMAND ALL OF YOU! |

Great song, though I always assumed it was reverse sarcasm on the part of Jello Biafra. I like the "We've Got A Bigger Problem Now" sequel better anyways. I have my reasons. :)
Anyways, JERRY BROWN!!! If that dude got elected, we'd have pundits talking about "Brown Republicans."

A very crowded field that year, including, but limited to: Fred Harris, Lloyd Bensten, Jerry Brown, George Wallace, Birch Bayh and Morris Udall.

Jimmy Carter ran against Mo Udall, Scoop Jackson (Sen,; D-Washington), Frank Church (Sen.; D-Idaho), and Jerry Brown.
It sucked not only that Poppy won in '88, but the WAY in which he won.
After that--and the recession he brought us, of course--we needed Clinton in the WORST way!:D

And was that the year John Anderson ran? Or was that 1980? Maybe it was. http://www.wgoeshome.com

10. Kennedy ran against Carter when Carter ran for re-election |
|
No other Dems ran that year. Carter beat him 2-1 but the party was hopelessly split leading to the nightmare that was Ronald Reagan.
I've never understood why Ted Kennedy wasted his only shot at the White House running against an incumbent of his own party.

Offhand I remember Rep Mo Udall, an environmentalist from Arizona (he was my choice); Sen Fred Harris-Oklahoma, a very liberal populist anti-big oil candidate; Peace Corp director Sargeant Shriver; Pennsylvania Gov Milton Shapp; Alabama Governor George Wallace; and Sen Birch Bayh-Ind.
I'm sure there were others. It was a very crowded field.
on edit: wow I totally forgot Scoop Jackson, Frank Church and Jerry Brown-earlyAlzheimers must be setting in.
