OMG!!! Moyers on Link TV right now says: This is a Class War!
Edited on Sat Aug-14-04 09:06 AM by seventhson
fought from the boardroom downward.

Most incredible speech I have seen in a long time.

If you have link tv try to watch this pspeech (at a forum on poverty)

If not findd someone who does and ask them to tape it.

It should be required viewing for all citizens.

Creepy quotes about Grover Norquist wanting to strangle America like a baby in the bathtub of overpowering debt in the trillions.

OMFG!!!

Keynote speech
Inequality Matters Forum
New York University
June 3, 2004

"The middle class and working poor are told that what's happening to them is the consequence of Adam Smith's 'Invisible Hand.' This is a lie. What's happening to them is the direct consequence of corporate activism, intellectual propaganda, the rise of a religious orthodoxy that in its hunger for government subsidies has made an idol of power, and a string of political decisions favoring the powerful and the privileged who bought the political system right out from under us."

34. Never criticize a man...
... unless you've walked a mile in his skin. For then you will be a mile away, and you will have his skin.

Glad to see there are a few people that know something about Aztec mythology but did you know that Xipe Totec is the God of rebirth and renewal? The closest equivalent in western mythology is the Phoenix bird that rises from its ashes.

It reflects my hope that the Democratic party will rise from the ashes of the 2000 stolen election.

5. How could "someone who dies" tape it?
:silly:

Ok, just being silly about a typo.....

I *did* record it a couple of weeks ago, when LinkTV first started running it. Its an excellent speech, and will also be rebraod cast at different times later in the month. I posted about it when I saw it, but got no responses.

Bill Moyers is such a treasure -- I really am sad to see him getting old enough to want to pull back on his activism, but I can certainly understand. I'm also feeling worn out and in need of rest from the fight.

Barbara Ehrenreich's speech will *also* be on LINKTv this month, and that should be good, also.

I've also recorded "Affluenza" and "A Day's Work For A Day's Pay", which is about the disastrous consequences of Clinton's welfare deform, and I also think that one should be required viewing, especially for all those who insist on believing that what Clinton did was right.

LinkTV is a great resource!

I am a lousy typist, have a slow computer, a lousy keyboard, bad eyesight (and am light sensitive so I keep the lights down to reduce glare) and I hate spellcheck (impatient).

It is now fixed to "does".

Thanks for the red pen editing/underscoring of my obvious deficiencies.

7. I told you I was being silly.
Sorry if that offended you.

ON the other hand, I've been criticised roundly on DU just for *being*, so one does become tough when one is confronted with constant criticism and crap.

I also have much of the same liabilities that you have. With added eye pain, also.

I've been told over and over that this is not *supposed* to be a friendly venue, and to toughen up. I guess that's how people want it.

It was humor.

Of course, I also added some extra info which you chose not to address.

It wasn't Clinton's welfare reform.
It was the RW Republican Congress's welfare reform. Clinton did sign it, but it was hardly his baby. If we had a Democratic Congress welform reform would have been much more humane.

20. You do know, don't you, that defending Clinton's actions
to a person who has been hurt by them is quite insensitive?

Clinton has NO defense of his actions. He recently said that his big mistake was in NOT "REFORMING" WELFARE AS HIS FIRST ACTION.

That doesn't hardly sound like someone who was "forced" against his will to sign something that harmed many people .

As I said, you WATCH the program, instead of defending him. Look at the grief of the families who suffered deaths because of Clinton's actions. For one brief time, get out of defensive mode, and look at this from the aspect of the people who were hurt.

This has been talked about on DU many times, and I will NOT continue to discuss this with people who only want to defend, and not even consider those who were damaged. There is plenty of material for you to peruse should you actually want to look at facts. I will no longer deal with stubborn hard-heartedness.

Furthermore, I brought up that subject as an example of the riches that are available on LINK TV, and will not allow this excellent thread to be hi-jacked in the name of defense of Clinton.

Now, I'm sure you will want your last word, so have at it.

17. Hello, Friend Kanary!
I'm not surprised that you like Bill Moyers. He is indeed a treasure!

I'm curious: do you recall a series he did about a decade ago on mythology? It started with wonderful interviews with Joseph Campbell, and went on to include other related interviews. I ask because he did a geat interview (show on PBS) with my cousin, Onondaga Chief Oren Lyons.

23. Hey, there, friend! Thanks for the reminder......
Yes, I remember that series. Another masterpiece from a true master! Moyers tries his best to bring out the higher nature of USians, while the RW appeals to the lowest.

I was battling health problems at the time, so couldn't really concentrate on some of the deeper intellectual studies. At some point, I'd like to view it again, in small, digestible doses.

That is sooo wonderful that he interviewed your cousin! If I wasn't before, now I'm *really* impressed. :hi:

I'm quite ignorant of Native American culture, but having grown up in Northern New Mexico (with an Indian Pueblo "in my backyard") I'm fascinated, and very interested in most aspects of the various NA cultures. I hope to be able to see that interview, and now it will mean that much more to me when I hear what is said!

As I'm sure you've picked up from some of my posts, I'm going through a period of being very upset with my country, and that includes the Dem party. I see Moyers as being more and more an island of sanity in a vast sea of corruption and moral blindness. I look back through history of the US, and am so sad that we had such a wonderful opportunity to learn from other cultures right here on this very continent, and, rather than doing that, we did our best to obliterate them. At least the founders had the sense to adopt some of their wisdom into our Constitution! I also look at the lost opportunity to learn from the Hawaiians, before driving their culture into hiding. What fools we be!

As I said, thanks for the reminder..... I will want to watch that series, and especially listen to your cousin!

8. Moyers on Grover Norquist in this speech
Now the Congressional Budget Office forecasts deficits totaling $2.75 trillion over the next ten years.

These deficits have been part of their strategy. Some of you will remember that Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan tried to warn us 20 years ago, when he predicted that President Ronald Reagan's real strategy was to force the government to cut domestic social programs by fostering federal deficits of historic dimensions. Reagan's own budget director, David Stockman, admitted as such. Now the leading rightwing political strategist, Grover Norquist, says the goal is to "starve the beast" -- with trillions of dollars in deficits resulting from trillions of dollars in tax cuts, until the United States Government is so anemic and anorexic it can be drowned in the bathtub.

There's no question about it: The corporate conservatives and their allies in the political and religious right are achieving a vast transformation of American life that only they understand because they are its advocates, its architects, and its beneficiaries. In creating the greatest economic inequality in the advanced world, they have saddled our nation, our states, and our cities and counties with structural deficits that will last until our children's children are ready for retirement, and they are systematically stripping government of all its functions except rewarding the rich and waging war.

And they are proud of what they have done to our economy and our society

TREASONOUS!!!

http://www.alternativeradio.org/ sells the audio on cd or tape. Also lists stations that run their shows, including net streams.
I just heard it on http://www.kexp.org/ which will carry the archive for two weeks. They usually put up their archive within a day or so.

22. Yes, and we should indict and try them for treason

...and then publicly execute them as punishment. We need to go Old Skool, people! Old Skool punishment of traitorous leaders has always worked in the past, and it will work now...
Indict 'em for treason, try them in a recognized court of law using a jury of their peers, and then, once convicted, stretch their friggin' necks on Washington Mall, and televise the whole damn thing on Teevee.

The shame attached to such an occurence will keep our future leaders virtuous and pure for decades...

26. Because it *is* nauseating.......
Unfortunately, we allowed the RW to do all this...... we must acknowledge that.

About all I can think of for us little folk to do is to do our own form of the "whispering campaign". For example, Bill Moyers has an excellent reputation, so one thing we can do is to make copies of this speech, and leave it in places where people are receptive to "reading material"..... drs offices, food court tables, etc. Not real powerful, but it does help when people who are a bit open-minded but ignorant have something outside the "norm" available to them.

I've thought about switching to Dish since the Murdoch purchase - doesn't Dish also carry Air America? It might be time for a change (after the baseball season - I bought the MLB Extra Innings package, and I'd hate to pay for it again on another carrier). I just HATE putting money in Murdoch's pocket. 25. On when it will be shown again....
If you go to the link that was given earlier, or just google LINK TV for their website, there is a schedule window that you can move down or up for the times.

However, if you push the "week" button, you will get the schedule for the month like on a calendar, with the weeks laid out. It took me a while to find that, and now I'm able to look ahead to see what's coming up that I don't want to miss, and how many opportunities I will have. :)

This Moyers speech is quite popular, and has been broadcast a number of times, and is scheduled for more broadcasts, so you're in luck. :)

Unfortunately, my reception isn't good, but I'm just grateful to be able to watch some of these wonderful programs!

http://www.worldlinktv.org/programming/programDescription.php4?tz=0&code=code

It is about the murder of CIA scientist Frank Olson. I was almost physically ill watching it. It is important especially now to know about what happened as Rumsefeld and Cheney helped cover up the murder and what he was researching in the 1970s.

If your cable does not have Link TV google their website and email a request for them to add it. With the RW taking over PBS this is one of the few places left for nonRW points of view.

BTW the Bill Moyers documentaries on mythology was The Power of Myth. I remember watching the program and loving it. There was also a book on the series that was good. If you are lucky your local library might have the videos. My local PBS tends to show The Power of Myth during fundraisers because it is still so popular :)

31. A great speech...a call to progressives...
...to reject both the RWing and 'third way' agendas.

- Clinton 'reformed' welfare...not for the good of the people...but because it's part of the DLC's agenda to 'downsize' our government and redistribute that money to corporations so they can 'create jobs and opportunities' for those they call the middle class. It's the DLC's version of supply-side, trickle-down economics.
