Reason why the 10 Commandments really DO belong in that courthouse
Because they are the foundation of our laws STOOPID!!!...Just look

1. You shall have no other gods before Me.

--Ok so that one talks about God a little bit and nothing about law...so what...look at this one:

2. You shall not make for yourself a carved image--any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

See that one says you shouldn't CARVE anything...but everybody knows GRANITE is SCULPTED and NOT CARVED so there...

3. You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain.

See now THIS ONE I think talks about the law of..um...well...look at this next one:

4. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.

HA!...see this is the basis of our law that says you can't work on Saturdays and will go to hell if you do...I mean...well...I've worked a few Saturdays but that's different....because....um...Look at this next one for example:

5. Honor your father and your mother.

SEE?!?! I'm sure this is a law...somewhere....and it DOES TOO tie into the next one...

6. You shall not murder.

THIS IS THE LAW!! If you kill someone you will go to jail....LAAAAWWWW!!!

7. You shall not commit adultery.

YES!!...well...in Afghanistan if you do this you could be stoned to DEATH...because it's against the LAW (on which this is based)....See? Basis of LAW

8. You shall not steal.

ALSO A LAW....I hope you naysayers can see that GOD MADE OUR LAWS....

9. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

Now this is of course a law...and should be followed...UNLESS of course your neighbor's dog comes to your yard to shit all the time...or his kids jump into your yard to steal my MANGOS (little pricks) or if he GRABS your newspaper in the morning before you wake up...but...otherwise...it's a LAWWW!!

10. You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor's

Now of course THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT COMMANDMENT THAT IS NOW LAW...because IF YOU DID COVET his things...then you would want to go out and buy them..and if you did and everyone you knew did this...then the Economy would...wait...it would actually...WELL IT'S BAD!!!...just trust me...

So there TWO of these TEN commandments are the basis of LAWS we have today...and the others...um...SHOULD BE...except if he throws garbage over your fence...the dirty bastard...BUT ANYWAY...There you are my children...READ AND OBEY!!

1. Thank you!
I've tried to point this out in every decalogue thread that has come up.

And the two that actually have something to do with laws are so broad as to be included as law in every culture in the world regardless of whther or not there was Judeo-Christio-Islamic traditions practiced there.

2. Good points!

I like your take on this, and agree.

Something else that bothers me about this... As if "we"(Judeo/Christian ethic) have a monopoly on ethics. As if to say NO other religion or set of beliefs values life enough to say "Thou Shalt Not Kill". Umm, hello, I think they ALL do! And almost all have various distinctions which make even that law/commandment laughable(death penalty, justified war, etc.)

It's easy. Jefferson advocated separation of Church and State for the health of both. This stupid situation is exactly what he sought to avoid. It makes mockery of government, law, and religion.

14. Ethics don't require religion or even spirituality
My husband and his entire family are atheists, they have no spiritual beliefs at all, and they are probably the kindest, nicest, most decent people I've ever met in my life. All of them liberals, too, naturally, LOL! When I've asked them about this subject, they say that they always try to do the right thing simply because it's the right thing to do, and why is that so complicated? Their children never obey from fear of hellfire of the wrath of God; they obey because they want to be decent, contributing citizens. They're not goody-two-shoes by any means. I'm agnostic myself, but very spiritual (I'm forever searching), and am trying to figure out how I want to direct my 4-year-old son morally. I was raised w/a belief in God, a fear of God, only realized in college that I was agnostic, so I wasn't sure how to proceed with a child "from scratch."

How nice to realize that you can be a decent, moral human being without eating flesh, drinking blood, or any of that other stuff that never made sense to me!

20. Agreed
I'm an agnostic myself.

Religion and personal ethics are completely unrelated.

3. You've convinced me!
That was wonderful!

I'd suggest that you send that to Judge Moore and others of his kind, but they might well take it seriously. It's always seemed to me that they're lacking in humor as well as brains and knowledge of history.

Actually, I'm being charitable, because the alternative is that they know what they're saying is nonsense but they're pushing their agenda anyway for entirely cynical and evil reasons.

9. Personally, I prefer the front
(I've always wondered why "ass" is used when that's not what the majority of men are referring to, anyway.)

12. Better wording
It should be thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's goodies. That would just about cover it.

7. Thanks
The way I look at it...If someone would sit down and challenge these MORONS sleeping in front of the courthouse with these facts...IN FRONT OF TV CREWS they would have no choice but to get up and go back to the trailers they crawled out of...

Do these people have jobs?

No doubt many of them rail against welfare moms. But...

"Yeah, ah'm getting some help from da gubmint, but ah'm doin' da Lord's work here!"

15. very humorous
but on a more serious note, i heard someone the other day say that the 10 commandments hang in the halls of the supreme court somewhere...is that true??? and if it is true, how would this issue be finally resolved if and when the supreme court decides to finally agree to hear the case?

Along with the Code of Hamurabi and other ancient examples of law.

17. here's another version
of 10 commandments that I think are more suitable.. These are from Solon the Athenian. Solon was born, we believe, around 638 B.C.E.

1. Trust good character more than promises.
2. Do not speak falsely.
3. Do good things.
4. Do not be hasty in making friends, but do not abandon them once made.
5. Learn to obey before you command.
6. When giving advice, do not recommend what is most pleasing, but what is most useful.
7. Make reason your supreme commander.
8. Do not associate with people who do bad things.
9. Honor the gods.
10. Have regard for your parents.

They should post these IMO.

18. Thanks for giving us a good laugh this morning
It always makes me laugh when fundies want to base the laws of our country on the bible. Not true! What they want to do is cherry pick parts of the bible that suit them.

I was raised by agnostics and didn't realize how much weird stuff was in the bible until recently. Below is a link to a site that illustrates this very well.

I also think there's an unwritten "11th commandment" that says the first 10 don't apply to conservative politicians.

21. The scary thing
is that some "christians" seem to think that they can't be cooperative, civilized people simply by following the laws of the land but that they can only be motivated to "proper" behavior by their religious beliefs.

Why are these people allowed out of their homes without supervision?

Mojo
