Split Screen Kicked Ass!
On NBC no less. MAN, the howls that went up when the crowd realized that the network wasn't going to adhere to that "camera must stay on the speaker" nonsense.

21. The split screen was fantastic
I don't know what was more entertaining: watching Kerry bite his lip and cock his head sympathetically at the incoherent shit coming out of *'s mouth, or watching Jr. furrow his brow during Kerry's segments like he was struggling with a difficult math problem.

...they kept adjusting the view so the tops of their heads were the same height... by the time they evened everything out, Shrub looked like he was sitting in a high-chair!

8. It was the most vindicating, gratifying moment in the campaign so far
Better than the acceptance speech...better than the protest in NY...better than Kerry's Letterman appearance, which was excellent.

I couldn't be more thrilled. I can't wait to go back to all the RW kids at college and get their reaction (yeah, I have no illusions that most of them are still living in their sad little spin city, but just to know that they're squirming underneath it all is so satisfying).

I feel like the cat who just ate the canary (not the *Kanary* tho :))

A little strut in your step, as you walk to your classes, couldn't hurt, either.

:hi:

Who knows....... they may actually have the grace to be embarrassed by the petulant little twerp.

7. best split screen since Fox had Cheney talking peace in Iraq
and then going to split screen showing some sort of night raid with bombs going off, marines shouting...general war and chaos.

It was priceless.

9. So what's the BC04 campaign reaction
going to be? I mean, didn't the networks disobey in a BIG WAY?

Man. Network news grows a pair. Wooot!

11. funny thing is...they probably obeyed the "rules" in that
they DID keep the camera on the speaker the whole time. THey just kept a separate on the other guy's reaction the whole time.

I bet legally they obeyed BC04 to the letter and found a loophole. THose legal eagles in BUsh's camp who would redefine torture out of existence DESERVE THIS.

What was up with BUsh demanding extra chances to salvage a pathetic showing on a particular point? And why didn't Lehrer acknowledge Kerry's attempts to politely get more of the same "bonus session" rebuttals?

that whole aspect is a microcosm of what we deal with. if you play by "the rules" you lose. You gotta roll up your sleeves and bloody the other guy's nose. forget queensbury rules. it's blood sport.

13. I didn't get to see the debate
But, technically, each candidate would have a camera assigned to them. So, keeping that camera on each candidate is no sweat- or any invalidation of an agreement probably.

The split screen is an effect that uses feeds from both cameras.

19. No, split screen was against the rules
#9 Staging
(a) Rules
(v) TV coverage
"When a candidate is speaking, either in answering a question or making his closing statement, TV coverage will be limited to the candidate speaking. There will be no TV cut-aways to any candidate who is not responding to a question while another candidate is answering a question or to a candidate who is not giving a closing statement while another candidate is doing so."

24. Split screen different than a cut-away
They explicitely say no TV cut-aways, but a split screen is not a cut-away.

26. Has anyone in the media pointed that out yet?
I was amazed last night when Bush kept jumping in ahead of the moderator, and demanding bonus time. I was glad he did it, as it made him look like even more of a whiny twerp, but still.

22. we won't see that next time....
....probably. The WH will fight tooth and toenail against it.

And it really made a difference. I talked to a very smart liberal person last night who watched it on CNN and thought Kerry had lost the debate. Very weird.
