I am so glad I won't apply to transfer there, damn right wing hell hole. GWU is better than GMU anyways.

4. I dunno

It's a right wing university though, which came as a shock to me because my mom and uncle are graduates of it.

aha! Journalism 101
"The decision came after a Republican state legislator wrote a letter to university President Alan G. Merten protesting the Fairfax school's plans to pay the filmmaker $35,000 to speak on Oct. 28"

"Loudoun County Del. Richard L. Black wrote a letter dated Tuesday urging Merten to reconsider the university's "lavish payment" to Moore, or to cancel the appearance.

"Tax money is being spent poorly, and for partisan purposes," wrote Black, who has one of the General Assembly's most conservative voting records."
Loundon is one of our fastest growing and is more conservative than Fairfax but not as big. I actually think I saw a magnet for this guy in a home of someone I knew.

5. Two "conservative" lawmakers in the state senate
complained Moore's $35,000 fee was an improper use of public funds. The University President caved (most likely under pressure and threat of future funding requests) with a statement that it wasn't appropriate 'this close to the election'. Event hadn't even been advertised yet.

7. They got a lot of right wingers on their boards too
Too bad, I was considering going to this, I bet you they do the same thing to Green Day, because I hear Green Day is playing in a few weeks there too.

15. Alas....
Alas, my old school did the same, and for much the same excuse, i.e. "too close to the election".

This was California State University at San Marcos.

The weird thing is that CSUSM is the most politically correct place I've ever seen

3. I'm a Grad Student at GMU
ANd I am very disappointed in their evident cowardice. GMU seems to be very diverse politically. I guess they were worried about their funding. We'll see what happens when The Repugs try to bring in Hannity or Limbaugh

6. well I am sure Dick Black will be just fine
He may as well introduce them. Is it really conservative? I've heard it is, I'd rather go to GWU anyway, :D no offense.

12. I haven't been there that long
Edited on Fri Oct-01-04 05:49 PM by SaveElmer
Back in school after 20 years in the working world...but I have met alot of people on both sides. The professors I have had have been fairly liberal. The thing about GMU is that it is primarily a commuter school, and reflects the politics of Northern Virginia, which are very mixed.

Edwards had a rally there last year, as did Kerry I believe.

Also Roy Wilkins is on the faculty if that tells you anything

13. Politics are mixed around here but the youth if they choose to stay
will make NoVA a dem stronghold and we're diverse too.

8. I heard it in passing, as I was rushing out to a Kerry "rally"
but I think what I heard is that Michael Moore is going anyway, with or without the pay.

Anyone else hear this?

George Mason University and San Diego both tried to censor Moore's speech because he refused to support George W. Bush.

In San Diego the students organized an off campus speech for which ticket demand was so great that 4,000 of the 10,000 tickets were gone in the first day.

Hopefully the George Mason students will do the same thing!

18. They cancelled him at San Marcos College in CA.
Edited on Fri Oct-01-04 07:29 PM by tjwash
Their reasoning was they could not find a conservative speaker to balance it out.

He will be speaking off campus and they went through 4,000 of the 10,000 tickets in the first day. See the link in my post above for more info.
