Daily U.S. Casualties 10/2/2004

As of Friday, 1,055 members of the U.S. military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003, according to the Defense Department. Of those, 801 died as a result of hostile action and 254 died of nonhostile causes. The figures include three military civilians.

The British military has reported 67 deaths; Italy, 19; Poland, 13; Spain, 11; Bulgaria, six; Ukraine, eight; Slovakia, three; Thailand, two; the Netherlands, two; and Denmark, El Salvador, Estonia, Hungary and Latvia have reported one death each.

Since May 1, 2003, when President Bush declared that major combat operations in Iraq had ended, 917 U.S. military members have died -- 692 as a result of hostile action and 225 of nonhostile causes, according to the military's numbers as of Friday.

The latest deaths reported by the military:

A soldier was killed Friday as military forces secured areas near Samarra, Iraq.

The latest identification reported by the Department of Defense:

Army Staff Sgt. Darren J. Cunningham, 40, Groton, Mass.; died Thursday in Baghdad, Iraq, when his unit came under mortar attack; assigned to the 89th Military Police Brigade, Fort Hood, Texas.


Army Pfc. Joshua K. Titcomb, 20, Somerset, Ky.; died Wednesday in Ar Ramadi, Iraq, of injuries received Tuesday when an explosive detonated near his military vehicle; assigned to 2nd Battalion, 72nd Armor Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, Camp Casey, Korea.
