Politics, competence, etc. aside, do you find Bush to be personally "LIKABLE"?
Personally, I just don't see it.

Bush does not strike me as stupid, but he is an intellectually lazy SOB. This down home, "plain spoken" clap trap may have had some merit in the wild wild west but even then I suspect our presidents were considerably more well versed in history and current events than Bush.
I find a man much more "likable" when he stretches himself intellectually and continues to push his limits. Bush absobes knowledge like a piece of granite absorbs water. It's not appealing.
I don't even think he's cute.

I can't detect anything likeable about the fraud. Like so many other Rovian lies, this one gains its credence through being told so many times.
A piquant zest for militarism combined with a careless disregard for the rule of law, draped in the flag, drizzled in quagmire - that's what the style-conscious neo-fascist is wearing.

he's the guy you see in a bar getting drunker and louder and daring you not to be his friend. But you see no reason to be his friend.
When the fight starts, he'll be in the middle of it, even if he's just trying to duck out of the way. He might, though, try to recover his manhood by clocking someone from behind with a 2x4.

I also find it disconcerting that a guy that comes from a wealthy family never had enough interest in the rest of the world to visit a foreign country before he became president. Scary!
I also don't want a president that I would feel comfortable "having a beer with". I want a president that is smarter, more educated and more articulate than myself. I want to know that he will represent our country well out in the world and make brilliant decisions.
Did you see the footage of him meeting with the Pope? I've never seen two people look more uncomfortable in my life than he and Laura did. You can't even put a dignified, engaged expression on your face at least for the sake of the cameras when you're meeting with the pope?

I don't understand why anyone would find him "likeable".
I'd much rather 'have a beer' with someone who's intelligent and compassionate; someone who lives life with a sense of passion and purpose, who genuinely wants to leave this earth a better place than he inherited it. NONE of these traits can be attributed to GW Bush*.

21. I disagree on Reagan. |
|
I disliked everything Reagan ever did, policy-wise, but I think Reagan's charm was real, and genuine. I couldn't help but like him myself. I nver voted for him (I couldn't vote until 1988) and I wouldn't have, but I can understand why even democrats were won over by him. He was a nice man who bought into a very flawed ideology, and in the second half of his term, hobbled mentally by Alzheimer's. increasingly relied on Bush sr. to run things
With Dubya, it all strikes me as very artificial. I don't think he likes people, or cares about people, or has any empathy with people.
Reagan did. Remember the story of the woman who wrote to Reagan because his budget cuts were going to make her lose her home? He sent her $1000 check of his own money.
I think that story is a good illustration of both his empathy on the one hand, and his cluelessness about what he was doing to people with his policies.

I don't give a rat's ass how "nice" and "empathetic" the old fool was, he was a lousy president.
Hell, LBJ was a nice guy and truly empathetic towards the people he tried to help. But, then there's the matter of 3 million dead Vietnamese..

49. You make my point for me. LBJ was deeply flawed, Reagan moreso. |
|
But on some level, they bother showed hints of humanity, and I believe they both believed that what they were doing is right.
Bush constantly claims that everything he does is righteous, but I don't sense that he's put much thought into whether it actually is or not at all.
And the few hints of "compassion" Bush has shown were for photo ops and were transparent and insincere as hell. And I agree that Reagan was a lousy president. But I would trade Bush for Reagan OR LBJ any day.
They were leaders. The resolute, christian, sincere person the right-wingers all follow blindly is nothing but a Rove-GOP construct. He doesn't exist. The real Bush is a petulant man-child. That's why there are constantly "insiders" coming out with books insisting that "the Bush you see on TV is exactly how he ius behind the scenes. He and Laura are always so gracious, etc.". I don't think they'd be so desparate to convince everybody that the cardboard cutout is real if it wasn't very obviously FAKE.

...that employed more than 40 people?
If so, there was somebody there who had a high-level job with a vague description, held consultations with people who were fired a couple of weeks later, and tended to get politely but noticeably in your face about "team spirit" and "everybody's got to chip in and shape up" and "can-do people".
Every worker bee in the joint, including you, spent 2 hours a day emailing resumes to everybody this side of Jesus. But you may or may not have ever gotten around to identifying this person as one of the main reasons you hated that job so much.
On edit: damn, I hate it when I leave out the crucial noun in a sentence that's already too long!

But since he and his right-wing cronies have dragged this country down into the sewer, and now are knocking on hell's door with our collective future (all in the name of profit), I find him **thoroughly** unlikeable, and utterly detestable.
From his mock piousness, to his blind stubbornness, to his barely closeted cruelty, I dislike that man intensely.

I have always found him to be a craven type. He had a "cringe" thing going in the first debate with Gore that reminded me of some smart ass kid who knows he's in trouble and is waiting to get smacked. Now apparently the "cringe" has turned into petulant impatient Boy King behavior. As George Carlin put it so brilliantly last night on Bill Mahr (sp?)when he was asked why W looked so pissed: "Because somebody finally stood up to the little oil pimp."
