Why haven't you called into your local talk radio call in shows?
With the syndicated republican infomercials you could make a career out of trying to get past being screened out,to give them a reality check. The "callers" for these national shows range from mostly scripted to entirely scripted shills, giving their testimonials for what's being sold,or pretending to be a laughably inarticulate, and misinformed critic. Though you still run the risk of being shouted down, and cut off,it's very easy to get on your local talk radio. This tool of the movement that calls itself conservative, and their republican infomercials can be your friend. The national shows are all about insult, and misrepresentation, that no one can call them on. Your local talk radio hosts may be trying to climb onto that already overcrowded bandwagon, but you can give them a reality check. When you hear a misrepresentation, call in. Keep it short, unless prompted. Be ready to answer any follow up questions. At least at first don't try to out insult comic anyone,be informational. I've been calling into local right wing radio,in Lincoln, and Omaha, with great success. Some local talk radio is carried on the INTERNET,and has 1-800 call in numbers,so you can tune, and call in anywhere. Tune out the national hosts,a few minutes listening to one will give you the talking points for all of them. Tune in local talk radio programs, where you have a chance of being heard.

2. Takes too long
Like most people, I have too many other things to do than wait on the phone for my 5 seconds of air time while they blather and run through commercials. Sorry, but it ain't gonna happen.

5. Some shows, and times are less busy than others.
I find that I get on quicker, and am given more time on the morning show in Lincoln, than on the afternoon drive time show in Omaha.

7. Not worth the time
If they don't agree with you, they

1) Twist your words around
2) Don't let you get a word in edgewise, once they determine that you're not on the same ideological page with them
3) Berate and insult
4) Cut you off, most often with an insult.

All the talk radio in my neck of the woods is right wing. They are none too kind to anybody else.

4. It's fortunate that you have time for this.
Too bad you don't have the patience it takes to reach thousands of local talk radio listeners, with your words of wisdom.

8. I tried it once
Edited on Sat Oct-02-04 03:07 PM by creeksneakers2
When Bush Sr. debated Clinton, Bush Sr. started telling a wild tale about a negative stock market bounce that occurred because the traders heard a rumor Clinton might win. The story was obviously untrue. I thought it was amazing that the national media never said a word about it so I called my local radio talk show to point out the false story. The host asked me a question on a different subject and then the call was over.

For the next two hours, all the calls on the show were complaints about "that guy who called in." The callers all talked much they hated people like that.(me)

I'd love to call again someday but I don't know a way to get past the filter. They might let you contest a detail, but never their basic view.

11. Have you tried it again?
Maybe they were glad you helped them get so many callers. Contesting a detail is a victory, and it sounds like all those callers knew that you made one.

14. One reason: The call screener
You are not getting past one if you don't support that station's views

15. A Lot Of Small Stations Don't Have Call Screeners
That's a luxuary. Take it from one who only had one "screener" (actually an intern/gopher) for a few weeks, in over 10 years of playing talk radio. Most shows have an engineer, and today even that's a luxuary.

Many of these stations are circle-jerk sessions...the same dozen or so listener/callers who have nothing better to do, thus a fresh voice is welcome.

Getting past a screener is no biggie...bullshit just like the host. Even if you have a contrary opinion, find something you agree with first to tell the screener...that butters them up...then just mention there were a few things you didn't quite understand...make it seem like the host needs to "educate" you...wanna bet you get on quick? Then once you're on...fire away! Many of these morons rarely face contrary opinions and freeze like Bambi in the headlights when confronted.

Getting on local stations is a great way to stir things up and isn't like the network shows that have staged calls. Good luck!
