Bob Schieffer as moderator worries me
I fear thatas a part of CBS, which is trying to distance itself from accusations of liberal bias, schieffer may go out of his way to slant questions in bush's favor

normally, i have no problem with bob. he grilled rumsfeld over the 'imminent threat' line. i tend to think of him as fair. but he was on hannity kissing sean's ass last week. and we saw the fluff piece 60 minutes did on o'reilly

maybe i'm wrong and should give schieffer the benfit of the doubt, but i can't help but wonder...

3. If Kerry pounds Bush on his record,
Edited on Sat Oct-02-04 05:12 PM by NYC Liberal
then Bush will get flustered and screw up like he did in the first debate. I have no doubt Kerry will.

8. Remember when she started asking him a question
during a press conference...he had a tantrum and started shouting "Susan! SUSAN! I called on Susan!"

Couldn't do that during a debate. :D

Kerry even said 'these guys are doing the work of the RNC' or something to that effect. :D

9. Not worried at all. Kerry can handle it
Edited on Sat Oct-02-04 05:22 PM by Ducks In A Row
During the debate I was thinking that Kerry was in control, regardless of what was happening with Lehrer or Bush.

It's that experience as a prosecutor that did it for him. As the debate went on I could imagine him prosecuting a rapist or a murderer and winning no matter how the deck was stacked.

18. Exactly so
Bush didn't lose it over any questions he was getting - they were fairly genign. What he couldn't handle were Kerry's answers. He's used to these hermetically sealed campaign appearances with chants of 'four more years' and he just couldn't deal with real criticism 'cause he hasn't hear any in the last four years. Bring bad news to * and you get fired. Ask Larry Lindsay or Eric Shinseki or Paul O'Neill. Unless his handlers give him a double dose of Thorazine on Friday he'll behave the same way he did last week.

10. not 'out of his way'

Schieffer just is a typical guy in a Republican demographic- white man over 50, relatively high income level, relatively low moral courage level, provincial or parochial education, few/no friends outside of his own demographic, a 'respectable' job that is something of a hustle, and raised to assume Mayberry to be the epitome of the American Dream.

He's going to ask questions on the terms he considers average American, i.e. rather like himself in language and tastes and political resonances in his experience. But it's likely that he'll let his people vet them so that they don't seem like code talk practiced only on one side of the cultural divide. So I guess we'll see the questions seem a little stilted- not entirely 'natural' to him as a moderator, and not language either side recognizes as echoing their own strongly enough to be likeable.

case a few years ago? In a cartoon? claiming the only reason clinton won was cuz of black support? It seemed very racist.....maybe that was the other slut (schneider?)
they all need trial and jail imho, as they created geeb (brother of geb) outta nothing

11. Time will tell on that but I've read
that bob schieffer is personal friends with the bushes.

In fact I'm surprised that bob "grilled rumsfeld over the 'imminent threat' line".

13. Fair point
He's right of center and CBS is under scrutiny after the font wars. My guess is that he'll try to be as low profile as posible.

14. Bob Schieffer is an old school professional.
I trust him to be fair regardless of his personal beliefs. Charles Gibson, however, never misses a chance to turn tricks for the right. He continually inserted r.w. talking points and opinion into the "news" during impeachment.

16. Bob Schieffer has always been excellent
I am not worried about him, since I have followed his comments over these last two administrations. He has always been objective and a true journalist. When they called the election for Bush* in 2000, he immediately said that, since he had no mandate, Bush* was obligated to put in place a true bi-partisan administration. And we know how this turned out. But Bob Schieffer will still be attacked. His brother, apparently, has ties to the Republicans. I still have faith in him, but will be watching with a jaundiced eye. It is so sad, that we have come to this. Bob Schieffer is one of the best on any of the networks.
