It was ment to keep the government from controling the church (as it had done in England and many other countrys for many years.It lead to corruption of the church and the state,also many who came here on the Mayflower were fleeing persecution in other countrys because they wanted to worship as they chose to.not the state approved religion.

The church's cant even agree totally on doctrin. The pledge including "under God", Student led prayer, manger or cross on public property and abortion etc are all issues.Everyone wants there issues to "win". I may not agree with all these or anyones "issues" but everyone has the right to fight for them.

They are fighting for there issues like we fight for ours,and elections are won and lost.Today the GOP has control but in Nove they may well lose the Exectutive branch.Does that mean the government will then control the church? It's all just fighting for Ideas and values IMO.

As for the state, the registration of churches to the gov't already does that.
