Is anybody else watching the 2000 Bush-Gore debate on C-Span?
It is just unbelievable, listening to what Bush promised. The one thing that struck me most was when he was asked about committing troops to war. He said that he would do so only when it was absolutely necessary, when there was a "clearly defined mission," so that the "mission could be accomplished," and when they had "a clear exit strategy." He said that it would be his job "to keep the peace." I swear that he actually said this. If only he had kept just this one promise, how much different things would be today, in this country and the world.;(

1. Isn't it a TRIP watching it with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight?
I didn't like or trust Bush then, but watching it now is almost surreal.

6. It IS surreal! It positively gives me the willies!
Bush was certainly my last choice among the candidates, but if he had kept half of the promises he made in 2000, we wouldn't be in the deep trouble that we are in now. He also promised to commit a trillion dollars of the then-surplus to help young workers. What surplus?! And he promised to commit to education and to "leave no child behind." Just ask Ted Kennedy how he came through on that one.:grr:

9. That was Clinton's major concern, as well
He knew that Osama bin Laden was responsible for the first attack on the WTC and the bombing of the USS Cole in Yemen, and was determined to get him. Clinton had three major priorities, brokering peace between Israel and the Palestinians, removing the very real nuclear threat of North Korea and fighting terrorism. But because these were Clinton issues, Bush* has conspicuously ignored all three of them. And just look at what the result has been. Kerry's right, Bush* is a very stubborn man. And while he may be "certain," that doesn't mean that he's not dead wrong.:-(

It is sooo disturbing, because I don't 'hate', or at least I didn't in the past. What's happening to me?

7. Same here.
I find myself hating as of late...the media, republicans who echo shrub's sound bytes. But, the truth is, I think, is that we hate the ignorance. At least that's what I tell myself to check myself. I don't want to end up like them...so full of anger and fear.

11. And Cheney's addressing this same issue, the military!
He's saying that we have to send our troops to war with a clear idea of their mission, why they're there. And he just said that we have to send them with the proper equipment, "or we put their lives at risk!" Does the man have no memory of what he has said?!

8. unbelievable !
Couple of things Bush said (in reference to troop deployment in the Balkans)that caught my attention.

1. "I don't think you should deploy troops overseas without a clear exit strategy."

2. " I don't think you should send troops without clearly telling them why they are there".

10. I guess that I missed the question, but I heard this answer
I agree! That's why I posted this! It was so unbelievable and so relevant to what's going on in Iraq, today, that I almost fell on the floor! :wow:

Somebody should play this footage for him. We know he's not watching, since he goes to bed at 9:30.:boring:

Welcome to DU, nine30! You obviously don't share Bush*'s bedtime, despite your screen name, LOL! It's great to have you with us!:hi:

13. Names of Places and People
I can't see it right now. But I remember that Bush wasn't very knowledgable about "who was who" in the world and were they were from.

16. Bush* had no clue. He knew nothing about the rest of the world,
let alone who was president, prime minister or head of state in any foreign country, let alone the names of the countries! He has learned foreign policy at our expense and has been a very poor student. It is very frightening.

15. I watched it last week
and the same exact comments regarding his conditions to be met in order for him to EVER use military force shocked me, to say the least. I posted something here about comparing his promises then with his promises of today. Al Franken did it yesterday with a live audience and you could hear the response.

I love you AL.

20. Al is indeed the best
I try to catch the TV version of his show, weeknights at 11:30pm EDT, on The Sundance Channel. What I most appreciate about his message is that he explains John Kerry's stance on the Iraq war, over and over, night after night. John Kerry was not inconsistent, despite what Bush* and his supporters say. They should tune in to Al Franken.:eyes:

17. If anybody's still up, and following this, Bush vs. Gore is being repeated
Edited on Sun Oct-03-04 03:55 AM by Rhiannon12866
on C-Span, right now. It's pretty frightening, listening to Bush and his promises, considering what has happened in the past year and a half, especially regarding his preemptive war against Iraq, which has totally divided the world and caused countless unnecessary deaths. He made promises to our military that he's obviously long forgotten.
:scared:

edited for typo...

Thursday night? He is coming off much better in this debate than Thursday. Kerry CAN NOT underestimate him in the next two debates.

19. No, of course he can't
But the first debate, which emphasized foreign policy and terrorism, was supposed to go to Bush*. Kerry kicked ass. So we can be only hopeful about the remaining two, but you're right, these people will stoop to anything, and we can take nothing for granted.
