2. I wondered the same thing...
I don't think I've seen that in Doonesbury before, but I haven't seen many of the Bush* stories.

I've always hesitated to use the asterisk in LTTEs and the like, lest I be labelled a reverse-Freeper. You know, everyone can dismiss you as a looney-tunes winger if you use "Democrat" as an adjective. But if Gary Trudeau's doing it now - bring it on!!

14. Trudeau acknowledged this recently
He said that as Bush's administration and the situation in Iraq deteriorates, so do the boar hairs on his helmet.
And yes, Doonesbury had the asterisk first. 'Twas initially used for the first Bush. Quayle was a feather, Clinton was a waffle with syrup and butter... Trudeau prefers symbols to caricatures.

3. I think he started it.
At least that's what I read on DU when someone asked what * meant. :hi:

4. He definitely started it..
I think he may have even used it for poppy's presidency, but I could be wrong about that.

7. You're right -- he did.
And Dan Quayle was a floating feather. I can't remember if he was a yellow feather or not, though I wouldn't have put it past Trudeau!

5. Hey in_cog!!
:hi:

That's great - I'm going to have to look for the latest Doonesbury compilation at the bookstore. I just rediscovered my collection of the very first Doonesbury compilations, and I'm looking forward to finding the John Kerry storyline.

10. Hey ClassWarrior!
:hi: Good to see you! How's the campaigning going? I just went to a Tari Renner fundraiser on Thursday and actually got a hug and kiss on the cheek from Renner. He knows me now. :) My son and I marched with him in our Labor Day parade, went to an Obama rally last Saturday (Renner was there) and the fundraiser on Thursday. My son played pool with his boys and they are now fast friends. :)

His campaign seems to be going well and since he's traveling around with Obama, he may just beat Weller! He's a great guy and I so hope he wins. He has a FRACTION of the funds Weller has so it's really an uphill battle. Weller has been running TV ads every friggin' day and Renner doesn't have the money to do that. We're praying for Obama coattails!

Good to see you again! :hi:

Doonesbury Rocks!

11. Very cool in_cog!
I got another big hug from Gwen Moore at the Kerry campaign's debate-watching party. I told her I wanted to say congratulations, because I wasn't able to get near her on her "Super Tuesday."

Goll dangit, who COULDN'T love a party of huggers?? Can you imagine Congressman Cheney hugging a constituent?? Ewwwwwwww...

More positive vibes for Renner...

8. Trudeau detests him, doesn't he -- and I believe he "knew him when"
at Yale.

12. He sure did! Excellent Interview with Garry in Rollingstone.....
An excerpt is available online...

http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/_/id/6298171?

<snip>

Even then he had clearly awesome social skills. Legend has it that he knew the names of all forty-five of his fellow pledges when he rushed Deke. He later became rush chairman of Deke -- I do believe he has the soul of a rush chairman. He has that ability to connect with people. Not in the empathetic way that Clinton was so good at, but in the way of making people feel comfortable.

He could also make you feel extremely uncomfortable. He was very good at all the tools for survival that people developed in prep school -- sarcasm, and the giving of nicknames. He was extremely skilled at controlling people and outcomes in that way. Little bits of perfectly placed humiliation.

13. The strategic use of humiliation sounds like Hatin' Babs all over.
He's his mother's son. (Would that make him an SOB?)
