Poll question: Which Supreme court decision do you think has had the most ramifications
Edited on Sun Oct-03-04 07:29 PM by JibJab
on american history? Explain why you think the option you chose was most important, or include other and say why that was.

i am gonna go with Bush V Gore...we will never know how different history might have been, or how far the ramifications of his policies will reach.

1. Dred Scott
Completely discredited the court and led to the Civil War.

8. Didja ever wonder...
How the current Supreme Court would have gone on that one? I'm guessing 6-3 against Dred Scott, with Thomas writing the opinion.

Oh, by the way, Clarence...

And for Fat Tony...

11. At least 5 - 4 against Dred Scott, and yes,
Uncle Thomas would write the opinion.

2. Marbury v. Madison
Edited on Sun Oct-03-04 07:32 PM by RoyGBiv
Without it, few of the other options listed would ever have been cases on which the Court could rule, certainly not in the way they were. For those answering Roe v Wade, your case isn't heard without Marbury v. Madison.

I'm not sure how the Bush v. Gore decision can be considered a valid answer since we don't know its impact on history.

3. Roe, caused wingnuts to become completely unhinged and become
1 issue voters. Took over GOP which used to be semi-ok and made it into theocratic party. Probably the most divisive decision of our times, although completely correct

4. Marbury v. Madison established
the role of the Supreme Court in a system of checks and balances. This case remains at the center of our democracy, no matter how much a corrupt administration and its corrupt cronies on the court try to change it.

5. Roe v Wade has had an impact on everything.
Some good, some not so good. It started the womens movement in this country, and has been the strongest dividing issue in EVERY election since.

6. Marbury v. Madison.
Edited on Sun Oct-03-04 07:37 PM by ocelot
The Supreme Court held it had the authority to decide what the Constitution meant. Without Marbury none of the other decisions would have been possible, because that case determined that the Supremes could determine the constitutionality of other laws.

A few other really important cases -- Dred Scott, Buckley v. Valeo, Miranda v. Arizona, Gideon v. Wainwright. Nothing bigger than Marbury, though.

10. What's the one that gave a corporation the rights of a person?

I'd say that the fall of democracy and the rise of fascism is a ramification.
