LA Times 49-47, Newsweek 47- 45, Gallup 49-49
Oct. 3 (Bloomberg) -- Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry improved his standing with voters on qualities such as leadership and his ability to handle Iraq and terrorism in his first debate with President George W. Bush, polls by the Los Angeles Times and Newsweek magazine found.

Both surveys showed Kerry pulled even with Bush when potential voters were asked who they would choose if the election were held now. Kerry, a four-term Massachusetts senator, trailed the president by 6 to 8 percentage points in five national polls conducted before the Sept. 30 debate.

Advisers to the candidates said they expected the contest to remain close until the Nov. 2 vote and that the debate topics -- Iraq and national security -- will continue to be central in the campaign ahead.

``President Bush still has a lead in the big issues, on terrorism, on Iraq, leadership,'' White House Communications Director Dan Bartlett said on the ``Fox News Sunday'' program. ``These are the issues which the president is going to get re- elected on.''

4. gallup is a wadste of space
George Gallup Jr., said in a speech earlier this year: "The most profound purpose of polls is to see how people are responding to God" and "When I ask a question on these subjects, what I'm always trying to find out is: 'Are we doing the will of God?'"

Hey, isn't that why U look @ polls?

7. Insanity, pure and simple
He is a messenger of the Witchy Man, and all he does is in fealty to the great Sky Chief's glory. Self aggrandizement writ large, that's what that is. You wouldn't call this "conservative bias" either, since it's not based upon unquestioned belief rooted in the past.

May that operation be one of the casualties of this election cycle.

6. Were any of them started after the debate?
I know a majority of people polled for Newsweek were polled before the debate. Do any of these represent the full impact?
