Whatever that's supposed to prove. We have no helmet law either, but when I rode motorcycles, I wore a lid. I got knocked-over at a stoplight once by a drunk. I was bare-headed, and got my bell rung pretty good.Got my helmet off the shelf and started wearing it again after that.

You don't wanna wear one, fine, that's your right. What I would appreciate is you laying-off the comments about the maturity or riding ability of those of us who choose to wear helmets.

35. Hey, you're smart to wear one. Had a friend who was a
transplant coordinator for a local hospital. The running 'joke' there - 'what do you call a person who rides a motorcycle and doesn't wear a helmet?' 'A donor.' Sure you've probably heard the joke, but in her case, it wasn't a joke. Turned out to be true way too many times. I used to ride myself, off road only, and always wore a helmet. Did a nice head plant once. Probably wouldn't be here today if I didn't have that thing on my head. :)

42. I guess I grew up in a dangerous time for children
No seat belts, no car seats, no child proof caps. You know, back when spanking kids for punishment was still socially acceptable.

I can't help snickering at the 6 year old kid at the corner house riding his bike with a helmet, knee pads and elbow pads. He might be safer than I was at that age riding a bike, but I learned that life is full of hard knocks.

14. Trek Fuel 98
Edited on Sun Oct-03-04 10:48 PM by Stephanie

He's crashed twice this summer - that we know of.

His bike is one of the best: a Trek Fuel 98 made of space-age carbon fiber with rear suspension that soaks up big bumps.

List price: about $3,100. He had it specially fitted by a Washington bicycle retailer.

<snip> On May 22, he lost traction on a dirt road, scraping his chin, upper lip, nose, right hand and both knees. The next day, a Secret Service agent riding behind him slammed onto the ground at high speed on a paved section, breaking his collarbone and three ribs.

Bush approaches steep downhills warily.

In the moments before Monday's crash, he warns his riding party of a sharp drop and a hard left turn ahead.

"I'm gonna show you a hill that would choke a mule," he says.

He hits the brakes and is steadily advancing downhill when his front tire loses its grip amid the loose rocks. His foot gets stuck in a strap that keeps it on the pedal.

- In the blink of an eye, his rear wheel is in the air, and Bush is flying high over the handlebars, landing on his back with the bike on top of him.

He lies motionless for a few moments. The reporter hoists the bike off him just as his medics arrive to attend to him.

There are trees and a drop-off nearby, and the road is littered with rocks, but Bush, wearing a helmet and a mouth guard, is uninjured.

22. The Schutzstaffel guy must've touched wheels...
"...a Secret Service agent riding behind him slammed onto the ground at high speed on a paved section, breaking his collarbone and three ribs."

For some reason, if you're close behind someone, and you touch their rear wheel with your front, you goin' DOWN, Chief, and usually HARD, too. Saw that on the Century ride I was on. Groupa riders in a bunch, leader grabs the brakes, #2 bumps wheels, goes down, big road rash and possible popped colarbone...

Dumbyass probbaly grabbed the brakes without calling it and the SS guy had his nose up the boss's ass and probably hit his wheel.

38. That's average for a high end mountain bike
Edited on Mon Oct-04-04 08:35 AM by librechik
I saw a used one for sale in Telluride for $3000. Used! They cost that much I guess because there are a lot of bikers who will pay for the super light expensive materials and engineering. My husband, who buys a couple pairs of $1500 skis every year (and gives away last year's models) didn't think it was any big deal.

Maybe so. But I think testosterone has a tendency to cloud one's judgement sometimes.

47. Here's how....
I own motorcycles and bikes. Some of it you can see, and some you can't. And some of the price is just hype. But the real reason for the price is the weight. Weight in the parts, and the frame. The frame is designed to support the stress, and no more. It's a case where all extra material is omitted. Highly engineered. Considering there are no pistons, valves, and transmission shafts and gears, it doesn't look like much.
My latest mountain bike is about $5000. The frame is aluminum, and in some places about twice the thickness of a beer can. Just welding it took years of trial and error. The top tube is hydroformed at the head tube. You might be able to see that it's not totally cylindrical. Miniature disc brakes. Tubless tires. Aluminum spokes. It's all extremely special shit. It's expensive because it's cutting edge. In ten years, all bikes will have this stuff. And it'll be cheap. The cranks are hollow. And don't forget the suspension. And all sealed bearings.
My YZ250 is on Ebay this week. Riding this mountain bike is so much fun, who needs gas?
