... portrayal of Iraq as Smirk's burden indicates nothing about how badly the debate went - or, indeed, anything at all about the debate that couldn't have been noted weeks before it. (Curtains weren't any part of the backdrop, either.) In all, this one could've been drawn by someone that never even saw a photo of the debate, let alone watched it.

I'm not complaining or criticizing your selection (which is super). I'm just practicing what I thnk is the necessary minimum level of skepticsm regarding the sloth of the press - even cartoonists.

50. Lets get the *Cheney* out of Iraq

First of all, if the Bush administration would have paid attention to a memo entitled "Bin Laden Determined to Attack U.S. Targets", then maybe we wouldn't be in Iraq and 9/11 probably wouldn't have happen. Secondly, there's no way that we will be able to "take the gloves off" and still hold the agrument that we are their to free the Iraqis. More aggressive attacks would result as more resentment from the Iraqis and Bush just don't get it!! All the Iraqis say the same thing to us-they thank us for getting rid of Saddam, but they curse us for staying there.

Have anyone ever thought for one second that the Iraqi civilians are fighting against us too because they don't want freedom? Maybe they don't want a democracy there! Maybe they like having a government control their lives. Maybe they believe that people are in power because Allah put them there. Maybe the way the Christians feel about Bush is the same way that Iraqi feel about their president. Maybe their religion is more important then their freedom. I bet you if you ask any Iraqi which one do you want a) a government that forces women to cover up or b) a women having the right to wear a mini-skirt, 99percent would choose letter a). And is that worth 1000, or even 1, American dying?

After all the mistakes he made and all the flip-flops George Bush has done, I wonder how they can call him a "strong and decisive leader" without snickering? Just a thought!

They don't 'hate us for our freedoms'. They don't hate democracy (for the most part). The majority of their elite was educated outside their country, in the US, Britain, Germany, Russia. (OK, Russia maybe not such a good example.) They have experience with democracy, and no doubt a great many of them hope for it. But democracy cannot be brought, or bought, with missiles. Sure, there are some Al Q. there. Sure, there are some Baathist holdouts. Most of the fighters, however, are only fighting because we are there. We, who have imposed ten years of devastating sanctions, bracketed by two wars that have cost them hundreds of thousands of lives. They see their cities bombed, their families killed, brutal, fascist order replaced by even more brutal chaos and lawlessness. If I were in their shoes, I'd be shooting at someone too.

Your conclusion may be right, just get out, but not because the Iraqi people have some kind of deep moral failing compounded by a militant religion. That's too broad a brush.

Will there be chaos, or even civil war if we pull out? Very possibly. But what are our options? In the end it could well be like Vietnam where we could have pulled out in '64, let the communists seize the south, purge a couple hundred thousand non-believers, then slowly work their way back into the community of nations; or, as we did, kill a couple million of them, then pull out, let the communists seize the south, purge a couple hundred thousand non-believers, then slowly work their way back into the community of nations. The difference? 48 thousand American, and 1 1/2 million Vietnamese dead.

68. I'm no Iraq expert

but from what I remember reading, Iraq was one of the most reasonable of the Middle East nations regarding women before we came along, blew them up and left chaos and renewed power to religious oppression. Women had some freedoms that other middle eastern countries didn't were alowed to leave the home to work, covering was less restrictive, education was available; even western dress was tolerated, I think. Now, women are back to being prisoners in their homes, denied education, their previous work, professionals and Drs are stripped of their vocation. It is not safe to leave the house because they could become victims of angry men who have to vent their rage and whose religion-slash-tribal-tradition teaches that women are dirt. Before you say "ask Iraqis what they'd prefer" as far as women go, be sure to include women in your subject group

This administration came into office determined to get Saddam. They focused on Saddam to the exclusion of anything else (other than their tax cuts). Read this story in the New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2004/10/03/international/middleeast/03tube.html) - it proves rather conclusively that they either knew Saddam did not have WMD or they had no excuse for not knowing. And read this story from today's New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2004/10/05/politics/05weapons.html) which also shows that Saddam was no threat at the time of the invasion.
