3. Remember the Kerry tan?
A few days before the debate, Kerry appeared to have a deep, dark tan.

Bush advisers must have exclaimed that a 'melanin gap' might look bad on TV. You know: tall, dark and handsome vs. short, white, and chimpy. Not good.

So, they put a bunch of orange makeup on the shrub's mug.

Meanwhile, the Kerry tan appears to have been a feigned darkening designed to trick the Bushies into just such an ultraviolet panic.

5. He's a big fat liar
That's why his face is red, like the proverbial boy who gets caught with his hand in the cookie jar. Some liars perspire heavily, some turn red in the face, some spout self-contradictory nonsense. True psychopaths can lie without showing any outward indication at all.

No big mystery.

Just look at the men next to him to see the difference. Bush is flushed.

8. My guess: Variations in available light. If we have any professional
photographers on DU, they'll know the answer.

13. I'm no photographic expert
but it is obvious that the color saturation and the contrast of the two pictures are quite different. That's not to say that * does not have a very red face. I'm unfortunate enough to also get very red faced on occasion, caused by stress, exertion, or embarrassment. I imagine *'s red face is often caused by stress and embarrassment.

12. bush has a skin condition
that was inherited from his dad. forgot the name but the condition worsens if one is exposed to sunlight for long periods of time or distress. there are some really hideous pictures of the old man posted here at du some time ago...
