our tax dollars to go to the Moonies (did you know?)

http://boilingmad.blogspot.com/2004/10/scarce-tax-dollars-earmarked-for.html

Despite record budget deficits due in large part to three Republican tax cuts for the superwealthy, isn't it great to know there's still federal money budgeted to fund religious cults? Sun Yung Moon's Unification Church will get tax dollars thanks George W. Bush's "faith-based" intitiatives.

If you're needy, seek help and get brainwashed while you're at it!

1. Bush just signed another tax cut that he says is for the "working.....
...class families". We need a reality check on this one, I just don't believe Bush will give anything to the working class without rewarding his rich friends. If anyone here at DU has anything that will show this latest move by Bush to woe voters to be a complete sham/scam/spam, please post it here.

4. I wonder what other religious cults are benefiting from the Bush....
...faith-based initiative? I would bet that Scientology is reaping windfall profits and nobody knows it.

2. Scary stuff!

President Bush has some new troops in his crusade to promote "healthy marriage" and teen celibacy with federal funds -- followers of the Rev. Sun Myung Moon, the controversial Korean evangelist and self-proclaimed new world messiah.

At least four longtime operatives of Moon's Unification Church are on the federal payroll or getting government grants in the administration's Healthy Marriage Initiative and other "faith-based" programs.

Two of those Moon associates were in Oakland last week leading dozens of local pastors and social workers enrolled in a "Certified Marriage Education Training Seminar" at the Holiday Inn next to the Coliseum.

In some ways, Moon is an unlikely ally for President Bush's crusade to promote traditional family values.

The 85-year-old Korean is perhaps best known for presiding over mass marriage ceremonies for devotees whose unions are arranged by Moon or other church leaders. After marriage, Unification Church couples are given detailed instructions for their honeymoon, right down to the sexual positions they are supposed to assume during their first three conjugal couplings.

3. Continued
-snip-

"Another longtime political operative in Moon front groups, David Caprara, now directs the Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives for the federal government's Corporation for National and Community Service. That agency runs, among other things, AmeriCorps Vista, which works with community organizations in low-income neighborhoods, and has emerged as a key player in Bush's faith-based initiative, handing out $61 million to faith-based organizations in fiscal year 2003.

Caprara is the former president of the American Family Coalition, a "grassroots leadership alliance" funded by the Washington Times Foundation and founded by Moon in 1984.

Caprara declined to comment on his Unification Church ties, referring questions to his press secretary, Sandy Scott.

"We don't inquire about employee's personal religious beliefs,'' Scott said. "What inspires David's work is a dedication to fighting poverty."

-snip-

"One key to Moon's success is a longtime political operative named David Caprara. Caprara, a Unification Church member and former assistant secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development under Jack Kemp, is well connected in the nation's capital and serves Moon in various overlapping capacities.

Caprara serves as president of the American Family Coalition, a Moon front group, as well as representing The Washington Times Foundation. He recently accepted an appointment to serve on an advisory council that Watts put together in advance of the GOP "faith-based" summit. The Washington Times Foundation then arranged to broadcast the event live via satellite to dozens of communities.

Caprara also runs The Empowerment Network, a public policy organization that promotes "faith-based" and family solutions to societal problems. Two U.S. senators, Santorum and Joseph Lieberman (D-Conn.), serve as caucus chairmen of the organization. Its "Empowerment Leadership Roundtable" lists two men who have gone to work in Bush's Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives Stanley Carlson-Thies and Don Eberly.

Through operatives like Caprara, Moon keeps a steady hand in Washington and thus in national affairs. Moon is able to open other doors through infusions of cold, hard cash when necessary. For example, many of the ministers who attended the "We Will Stand" events were given gold Christian Bernard wristwatches estimated to cost thousands of dollars apiece."

...which was founded by a former EST promoter and Scientologist. So these guys are tied in with those folks, I surprised that the entire Federal budget and Social Security surplus as well as all of the secret republican bank accounts haven't been turned over to these people already. October is not over yet!

8. Look at this:
:: September 28, 2004 ::
Landmark Education lawsuit likely to become another landmark for freedom of information on the Internet

Landmark Education, a privately owned for-profit company that sells controversial large group awareness training programs to the public, has sued the Rick A. Ross Institute (RRI) for more than one million dollars.

The lawsuit was filed in New Jersey and is currently moving forward within the court of federal Judge John Lifland (Civil Action No. 04-3022 (JCL)).

RRI is a non-profit tax-exempted charity devoted to providing educational information to the public about destructive cults, controversial groups and movements through the Internet.

RRI is one of the largest single resources regarding this subject area on the worldwide web today. More than 15,000 individual unique users visit its database daily. And the RRI Open Forum message board has more than 1,300 registered members.

The lawsuit recently filed by Landmark Education claims that information posted through the RRI archives about the private for-profit company constitutes “product disparagement” and represents “interference with ongoing business relations.”

6. More importantly Moonie money influences our elections.
A religious cult that advocates the destruction of our nation owns media outlets and funds politicians in our government.

11. I've never understood this...
Can you imagine the howling from the Moral Majority if Clinton had allowed one nickel of federal funds to go to a cult? Hell, to any group what wasn't judeo-christian? They'd be screaming the Hallejah Chorus from the rooftops.

But but (both Sr. and Jr.) can be in bed with a guy who has proclaimed himself God, who is the leader of a cult known for brainwashing its victims, and who has done jail time for tax evasion. And Pat Robertson seemingly doesn't give a shit, and neither do any other mainstream religious leaders.

I just don't get it.

12. Many fortune 500 companies get HUGE government cheese...
Even McDonalds gets money to promote those "chicken mcnuggets" imitation chicken fried chunks in Turkey and countries that probably and understandably revere poultry as a higher life form!

But money to help our downtrodden citizens? No way, they have to earn their keep! (well, give them a fucking job and pay them a wage that'll inspire them to DO a good job. Sheesh. x( )
