4. It's kind of a long story. |
|
Rush used to get pissed at his listeners who would call up and praise the show, so Rush started asking his callers to just say "ditto". Thus, the phrase dittoheads.
I may not be 100% on this. It's the explanation my dad gave me years ago.

Comes from fans calling into Limbaughs show and saying such moronic things as "mega dittos" when they agree with Limbaugh, it happens frequently since Limbaugh gives his listeners their opinions and tells them what to think.

7. Correct me if I'm wrong here... |
|
The listeners/followers of Rush Limbaugh are so into "group think" that they allow Rush to dictate, delineate, and define their entire repetoire of knowledge. Thus, when anyone asks what they think they just say, "Ditto what Rush says." Thus they are "ditto heads".
I think this is how the phrase came into being, and Rush uses it to his advantage (to control is meekly sheep). Tell me if this is wrong anyone. (?)

9. You can see my post above. |
|
He told his listeners to say "dittoes" if they agreed, so they could get to the point of the call sooner, thus avoiding lengthy BS calls (ironic, I know). The phrase has just evolved as an all-encompassing term for the RW talk radio crowd.

10. People who call into Rush would always say "ditto"... |
|
... to what the prior caller (or Rush) had said... as if mindless and brainwashed.
Oh who am I kidding! Not "as if"! They ARE actually mindless and brainwashed!
Anyhoo, it got to be such the usual response, that callers would just say "dittoes", and Rush fans became known as "dittoheads". Al Franken has a "resident dittohead' who he lets spout his nonsense on his Air America show (think Limbaugh would ever do that?).
Isn't it fitting that arch-conservatives have taken as a label a name which means, basically, "what the other guy said"? That's the level of their critical thinking capacity.
