Can someone help me settle an argument that I had with a crazy freeper |
|
I had an argument with a lady that works at my local grocery store. I was discussing job outsourcing with my neighbor when the freeper lady buts in and gives us her opinion.
She said that the outsourcing was going to China because the Chinese invented everything in the first place. She then told us that Bush took on a horrible economy in the first place and that is why corporations are outsourcing so that they can provide us with jobs. I then asked her what kind of jobs are they going to provide us with if they outsource all of them and she couldn't answer the question. She then repeated that the Chinese invented everything in the first place so they should be the ones manufacturing it.
This is the first time that I have heard anything like that. How does she rationalize that everything was invented in China and that the jobs should all go to their citizens?

I mean, really, it makes no sense whatsoever.
Ask her if Bush inherited such a bad economy, why did he say we needed tax cuts in order to spread the surplus around?

How in hell did Bush inherit a bad economy. I'm also sure the Chinese would be astounded to learn that they invented computers. Remember UNIVAC?

Blue jeans? Computers? Textiles?
Should we outsource all the cheesemaking jobs to Switzerland? Should Ore Ida move to France to make their french fries?
That's the stupidest argument I've ever heard. You should've kicked her in the shins. Okay, maybe not.

You're correct about trying to reason with them. How about trying to argue with someone who thinks Kerry isn't Presidential material because he supported Clinton? And Clinton is "of low moral fiber" or some such crap. How do you deal with THAT shit? You can't.

that the Chinese invented an enormous amount of things used in the world today, but that has no connection to corporations outsourcing jobs there this year.
She seems to be making the assumption that the corporations are outsourcing on some moral grounds...to reward the Chinese for all past inventions.
And how any of this would provide jobs for Americans, I don't know.

17. AL GORE WAS WRONG ! THE CHINESE INVENTED THE INTERNET ! |
|
Seriously though ? What is the source of her information ? The Chinese didn't invent everything. They're great at supplying cheap labor in abundance. The cheap labor combined with no restrictions environmentally and no laws protecting workers churns out products. The products are then sold to Americans at the same cost (not a reduced cost a before). Bottom line: it's great for business and does nothing for the consumer. And it's not in business best interest to provide jobs here. I mean what do they need us for ? They can just outsource their delivery of the product to one of the large delivery companies.

I think the burden is on her to demonstrate, by a few examples, what types of things have been invented in China and why they should be produced solely there. And, if she's talking about largely historical examples - say, the refining of rubber (I don't know if that's true or not) - at what point does the invention of something come into the domain of others? That is, when is something so widely used or employed that it is senseless to call it the property of one person or state?

Ask her how she would feel if she lost her job to someone living overseas and how would that improve the economy if she couldn't afford to buy anything (being unemployeed).
Always make it personal. Make her use her emotions in a new way.
Also ask her if she would believe it if her boss fired her and told her it was in order to provide more jobs.
