Food Stamps, Pensions, Medicaid Payments Still Delayed

POSTED: 11:37 am MDT September 27, 2004
UPDATED: 1:36 pm MDT September 27, 2004

DENVER -- County officials vented their frustrations over a troubled welfare computer in a meeting with Gov. Bill Owens on Monday but said they would keep working with the system.

The new computer has been blamed for delaying food stamps, pension payments, Medicaid and other vital services for hundreds of thousands of people. Owens ordered the computer system to go online on Sept. 1 despite pleas from county officials who said it wasn't ready.

Half a dozen county officials met with Owens for an hour and afterward said the old system of distributing benefits was no longer usable.

(snip)

About 22,000 people who care for grandchildren were warned they may not get their checks Oct. 1, but state Human Services director Marva Hammons said Monday she expects most of those checks to go out on time.

(DID they? It's October 4th, mid-afternoon... Doesn't Bill Owens claim to be a "compassionate conservative?")

1. No, calimary, no followup..... they're "Staying the Course", of course....
The State paid 200 MILLION bucks for this system, so of course, they're sticking with it.

The Dems are strangely silent.

3. I wouldn't mind seeing that, myself. Saw him on Bill Maher's show
and was left shaking my head over what a sanctimonious putz he was. Gee whiz, I almost felt as though I wasn't holy enough to listen to him. Unfortunately, he seems positioned to be one of the new rising stars of the republi-CON party... nice 'n' upstanding and clean-cut, don'tcha know? It was one of those "uh-oh, here's trouble..." moments for me.

Just curious though, any letters we could write? Or numbers we could call? Just to make SOME stink?

6. As for taking action...... writing LTTEs to Denver Post and Rocky Mountain
Pravda -- err-- News, would be a good start. If any would consider doing that, I'll give the addresses.

Someone sent me the home address of the woman who is the spokeswoman for this mess, and while I agree that she should feel some heat for this, I doubt that mail to her home would be very productive.

I have tried to figure out what could be done..... anyone have any ideas? I'll gather addresses and phone numbers, if someone knows what would be the most productive ones.

I'm really upset that so many people are suffering so needlessly!!

8. LTEs, maybe letters and phone calls to state Dems
to get them to make a fuss.

This is outrageous. But of course, hardly anyone cares because, after all, it's only the invisible poor.

10. And what is the State DOING
for people who have no food, or who are facing eviction, if this is still going on? Is it? Any Colorado folks here who can update us? Has it been fixed?

People receiving food stamps have NO RESERVES. Is the state distributing food, formula, diapers? Is the state issuing statements to landlords that "the check is in the mail?"

If this is still going on, then the Governor's office and Colorado's Congressional reps should be contacted - should be FLOODED - with phone calls, letters, faxes, emails to DO SOMETHING NOW to assure basic needs are met.

11. No, there's nothing "GOING ON", nothing being done.
Just defending their stoooooooooooopid mistake in spending 200 MILLION $$$ for a crap system, and dumping the old, owrkable system before the new one was running.

Yes, people are suffering heavily, and will probably be some deaths coming out of this. You can see just how much that matters...... look at how this sinks.

I've called and written what I can, and can't get anyone else interested.

So, when it happens to me, then I guess it's just tough luck.

DU can rally for military people, but a bum like me is just supposed to die quietly, and stop making a fuss.

Yes, I'm pissed. Sometimes the values here just stink.

I've also come to a big decision... since issues like this are NOT important to most other DUers, I can no longer put my effott and energy into any other cause, whether it's giving time to Kerry, or caring about gay issues, or the military or anything else. I just can't do this one-way street anymore.

I've done what I can, and now I'm done.

12. Contact information for House and Senate
available at http://www.vote-smart.org/index.htm

I sent a letter to the Senators but doubt it will go anywhere but the circular file, as I am not a Colorado resident.
