4. I suppose some people believe... |
|
... descent to a state of complete assholery is a noble goal. :P
Seriously, there are people out there who would really like to be like George Bush--arrogant, intellectually lazy, smart-assed and still be worth a lot of money and get respect from half the country. Most of the ones who want to be are arrogant, intellectually lazy and smart-assed. They just aren't rich or respected, and Bush serves as a role model for them.
Probably a lot of people out there who think they just aren't being arrogant, lazy or smart-assed enough. :P

5. some people revert to beastial attack reflex. he's one of them. |

they are inarticulate in the sense that some can speak quite well, but they don't care to take time forming an opinion or idea outside the carefully built archetypes they rely on such as: America is good and anything against America is bad. America is strong. Money is good and people who don't like money are bad. Government is bad. Business is good. If you attack me verbally, I want to attack. If you attack me physically, I want to attack. If I perceive I am not getting my fair due in life, I want to attack. I'm really into resolving my issues and conflicts with ATTACK.
So....for a wide variety of personalities who aren't particularly intelligent or thoughtful, Bush represents an easy slide into some belief systems they are familiar with. Fighting the war on terrorism is really hard, full of ambiguity, not easy to discern victories, etc. Too much of that fight is metaphorical and involving diplomacy, bringing people to trial, fixing security flaws, etc. People want a good old battlefield where people with guns and different colored uniforms or skin shoot at each other to resolve conflict.
Other easy buttons for these preprogrammed types are Religion and God. If someone in their religion says GOd said A or B or C is bad...they are gonna believe it. Same with something good.
Gay = bad Abortion = bad Islam = good (but really, it's bad<wink>) Sex = bad Guns = good War = bad (except if you're carrying the red/white/blue)
They keep things really simple for themselves and Bush keeps them simple too. As long as these people aren't willing to peer more deeply at how Bush is a front man for the group that is robbing them blind and taking away what is special about this country--balance of power, Constitution including Bill of Rights, liberty to speak, think, protest the powers--this guy will continue to win their support.

if any of them actually believe any of the stuff they say. I don't see how anybody with a human level of intelligence could believe John Kerry took a movie camera instead of a gun into combat. So I figure they are just all lying. Then I hear them call up the the local talk radio station and they all sound so angry about unbelievable stories that I wonder if they take this stuff seriously.
The wingers I see on the net act like its all a big funny game to them and they love to cheer along when somebody is going to get a lib.
I think they see the world as an us against them proposition. They don't care who their guy is or what he is or does. He's their guy. A winger's basic world view is that the government is a foreign entity run by con men out to steal the hard earned money of decent Americans. Once that is believed, it doesn't seem wrong to lie. What's wrong with lying to protect yourself from thieves?
There's an anger too, which I suspect is residual anger from the life lesson that one is pretty much on his own. The beautiful conservative belief in the individual results in isolation when its taken to the extreme. Nobody cares about anybody. They don't see all the good people do. They can't believe that anyone's core beliefs could be based on care about others.
Those are my theories for now. I've tried to find books in the library to explain wingers to me but I haven't been able to so far. Just things like the authoritative personality theory. Its all empirical. Demanding proof for every premise, the books never achieve any depth. If anybody could ever figure out a way for wingers to stop believing that this is all about us versus them, we could solve all these big political problems, and maybe head off Fascism.
