Bush signs tax bill in 'swing state' of Iowa

Monday, October 4, 2004 Posted: 1:16 PM EDT (1716 GMT)

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Just in time for the election, President Bush is going to one of the most contested states to sign his fourth tax cut in four years.

The White House held the signing ceremony Monday at a YMCA in Des Moines, Iowa, a Democratic area of a state that Bush lost by a razor-thin margin in 2000.

His Democratic opponent, Sen. John Kerry, follows Bush into Iowa this week, appearing Tuesday in Tipton to discuss issues that concern middle-class Americans. (Special Report: America Votes 2004, the issues)

An estimated 94 million Americans will be affected by the tax relief, which keeps three middle-class tax breaks from expiring on January 1. It also revives other tax incentives for businesses.

The tax package that Congress passed last month will:

Keep the per-child tax credit at $1,000 for five years.

Extend the broader 10 percent tax bracket for six years, helping cut taxes for virtually all taxpayers.

Retain for four years a provision giving married couples relief from the so-called marriage penalty.

The tax relief will cost $131.4 billion in government revenue over the next decade. In addition, Republicans added provisions to extend 23 tax breaks for businesses that were set to expire. The biggest item in this group, which costs $12.97 billion, is a tax credit to businesses for research and development.

4. Most of this 'tax relief' goes to the richest Americans...
...with a few crumbs for the 'middle class'.

- Don't be fooled by the rhetoric. This is another tax cut for those who don't need it.

12. The difference? Bush is just doing it as an election ploy
The only time he pretends to give a shit about the middle class is right before an election.

5. Common sense...
...says that you can't cut taxes and increase spending...unless the intent is to destroy the US government and defund social programs.

9. They WANT the government of Somalia.
Every man for himself and his warlord.

They just haven't figured out that this is their ideal.

8. This kind of thing really, REALLY pisses me off...
Anybody whose vote can be bought YES, BOUGHT is one corrupt son of a bitch. Anyone who votes for a candidate because they'll get a tax cut doesn't deserve to live in MY country. Share the fucking burden or get the fuck out.

Pass that on to your pug "friends".

11. Their share of the burden is ZERO
People that don't pay taxes can't receive much of a tax cut. The previous poster was referring to those who sold their vote for $200. I repug colleague of mine bragged repeatedly about his $200 that he received from Bush. He completely admitted that Bush bought his vote. Four years later he's cursing Bush because he's lost way more than he received in all of his tax cuts because of Bush's failed policies. He won't be voting for him twice (he won't vote for Kerry either, though).

13. Low income families pay their share through payroll and other taxes..
...so it's not as if they're not burdened by taxes. Notice that the tax cutters on the Right never even mention reducing the taxes that hit the poor the hardest? They're only concerned about the taxes on their rich friends.
