Registered 8 voters and pissed off freeper in the process. Woohoo! |
|
I work at a library on a college campus and I've had numerous students come to the desk asking how they can register to vote. Thankfully, here is Phoenix, they can go online and take care of that with a few keystrokes. I've been happy to help.
A nice, young woman who is just barely eligible to vote asked quietly at the desk if I could walk her through the process. I said sure. I told the people in line behind her that I would be right back to assist them.
A patron who was in line behind her, wearing a Protest Warrior t-shirt, snapped, "If she hasn't already registered, she shouldn't be voting in the first place."
I smiled and calmly said, "Sir, the deadline is midnight. According to my watch, she has 4 hours left." Through gritted teeth, I explained that if he didn't want to wait, he could use the self-check machine, even thought I knew he didn't have the brains to handle it.
He huffed and puffed and crossed his arms over his ugly t-shirt. Just to piss him off, I took my time helping the young lady register. She explained that because of her busy school schedule, she almost forgot to vote and she didn't want to miss out on getting * out of office. I offered her a K/E bumpersticker and made sure to hand it to her at the counter where my favorite freeper still stood fuming.
I wish every night was as enjoyable as this one has been. :)

That kid came dangerously close to violating the VRA |
|
Based on your description, he came mightly close to violating the Voting Rights Act of 1965: intimidation of someone seeking voter registration.

Yesterday I just finished up handing out literature and introducing myself as the new Democratic precinct captain for my precinct. The old folks home was the last stop. I walked on in and proceeded to hang literature on the doors that were closed and talked to some where the doors were open. One of them was a strong Dem and needed a ride to the polls on election day. I sat and talked to her for awhile.
Today, I received a phone call from the local Dem headquarters. They told me they received a phone call from the old folks home board asking us not to come there again!!!! I told my grandpa about it and he says the board is made of Republicans and that's probably why they didn't want me to go there. UGH!

13. They can't keep you from visiting the nice lady. |

Perhaps you could take her an absentee ballot. If they could try to keep you from taking her to her polling place, that may be a viable option. Keep talking to her.
And good for you! :bounce:
Also, they can't legally keep her from voting, or try to coopt her vote. It does make you wonder what they are up to.

14. You planted the seed anyways. |

Even if you aren't allowed back there, residents now have information informing them that there is another option from the one the old folks' home BOD is feeding them.
Way to go!

I think we had only 20 percent, if that, turnout in the primary election.
It was pathetic. Hopefully that number will go up for the general election.
