John Edwards to be on TCM on Oct 7, to introduce a film. |
|
TCM has invited four prominent U.S. Senators to appear in interviews with host Ben Mankiewicz to introduce significant films in their lives. On October 7, John Edwards, Democratic vice presidential candidate and U.S. Senator from North Carolina, will consider Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964). Edwards chose Stanley Kubrick's black comedy about nuclear war because of its message that "putting this kind of power into the hands of human beings - no matter who they are, is an extraordinary thing."

1. Do you have a link for this? . . . |
|
and is that Edward's quote? I hope not, or that it's been pulled out of context. As it stands, it's quite inane.

2. 'Extraordinary' can have different meanings, |
|
depending on the context, if you mean that word.

4. Actually, the whole quote is banal. . . |
|
as no one "put" the power of the atom in human hands; it was willfully grabbed. And to characterize it as "an extraordinary thing" misses the singular character of the event.
Far better to consider the words of Dr. Viktor Frankl, renowned psychotherapist and Auscwitz returnee:
For the world is in a bad state, but everything will become still worse unless each of us does his best. So let us be alert -- alert in a twofold sense:
Since Auschwitz we know what man is capable of. Since Hiroshima we know what is at stake.

3. Dr.Strangelove : or how I learned to stop worrying and love the Bomb. . . |
|
. . .is the title of the movie in which Peter Sellars played several roles, along with a lot of other Hollywood talent. You really should get a copy on DVD or VCR and watch it. It's VERY anti-war and VERY funny in a dark sort of way. . . And NO, it's NOT a quote from Edwards, but I anxiously await Edward's treatment of the subject.

5. Thanks for the recommendation. . . |
|
but I've been considering the implications of Strangelove since I first saw it in its original theatrical release.
I hope you learn something useful from Mr. Edwards introductory remarks. If you think of it, maybe you can transcribe his comments for those of us who won't be watching the film.
