6. The polls must be showing that he's scaring off the undecideds
with his faith-based obsessiveness and fundie connections.

8. Bush confuses the Founders with the Pilgrims
He has no idea of American History (wasn't he a history major?) so when he talks about the "Christian" Founders what he's really thinking of is Pilgrims. The Founders went to great lengths to keep the religious radicals out of the government.

11. Not that 17th C emigrants to the N. American continent would
recognize current fundamentalism.... Arianism, disbelief in the Trinity and a community-based, works based faith are the norm for the 17th C in N. America. This perseverance of salvation is a new concept that the emigrants would have laughed at... and then set up the heresy brand.... (perseverance of salvation is the concept that "once saved, always saved" is true... rather than being saved and having to work hard to stay saved... Perseverance of salvation is basically a blank check to behave as badly as you want to because you're saved...)

Modern fundies would find themselves branded and exiled for their ideas in 17th c. "pilgrim" communities (not least of their refusal to care for the poor and unlucky...)
