1. FEAR
And, unfortunately, fear sells. There are a lot of morons out there.

3. Kerry could play the fear card too, if he was so inclined
BushCo has used fear of a vague external enemy (world terror) to blind the American public to the domestic damage that has been occuring within the country. Kerry could raise the fear level of the American public concerning the further disintegration of the economy, social security, the availability of health insurance, the rollback of Roe v. Wade, the loss of our manufacturing base, the deficits, education and the environment that another four years of Bush would bring. In the case of Bush's harm to America's domestic health, the fear is very real and well-justified.

5. You're missing a key point here.
I understand what you are saying, but Kerry could NOT mess with people's heads with those issues. Not in this political climate.

Those are the issues that people SHOULD be worried about (economy, health care, the environment). However, the fear of being attacked by some outside force feels much more primal and immediate to them...even though it shouldn't.

It scares people to their souls to be threatened by explosions and gunfire. Things like losing a job are scary, but people feel that they can deal with them much more easily.

Bush* and Co. are playing the "terra" card for a reason. People don't think things through and the irrational fear Bush* is selling sticks with them.
