Chinese Military Reports, 'America Is the Enemy!'

If you still think I'm just speculating... that this couldn't possibly be planned... maybe you haven't heard yet about a hugely popular book that's still making the rounds... first in Beijing... and now at the White House, the Pentagon, and CIA headquarters.

The book is called 'Unrestricted Warfare.' It's written by Colonels Qiao Liang and Wang Xiangsui, two high-ranking officials in the People's Liberation Army of China (PLA).

America, says the book, is China's most likely enemy for at least the next two decades, if not for the whole 21st century. The battle, they say, will be fought everywhere.

Drug smuggling... attacks on America's computer networks... media manipulation... intellectual piracy... exploiting loopholes in international law... and one of the post powerful weapons of all, attacking America's financial base.

Here's a direct quote from page 51 of the book:

'Financial war is a form of nonmilitary warfare which is just as terribly destructive as a bloody war, but in which no blood is actually shed... When people revise the history books... the section on financial warfare will command the reader's utmost attention.'<snip>

They view America as potential enemy because we positioned us like their enemy: from the spy plane incident to troops in Japan, from preemptive strike to arms sales to Taiwan. This is NOT their strategy; it's a think-piece by guys who are SUPPOSED to come up with such ideas. It's not a big deal when taken in context.

I didn't see anything wrong or unrealistic in there. My reaction was, well, "duh", of course China is going to rise and become the primary opponent of the US in the future--there is no other candidate (unless we come into such conflict with the EU also). I don't necessarily agree that there will be any direct military comflict, but that's why all those other forms of warfare listed are so believable. China would love to be pre-eminent; we'd like to remain pre-eminent. Thus some kind of conflict is virtually inevitable, even if it's a very low-level one.

I do, however, have doubts about the US ability to stay on top anyway, regardless of what China does. I fear the stupidity of the Republicans and the neglect of prior Democratic adminstrations have set us on the wrong course into the future.

The Chinese and US have regarded each other as enemies for decades now. But apparently the Chinese have learned from the mistakes made by Russia during the Cold War, don't spend yourself to oblivion pumping up the military. Sad to say, but the US has yet to learn that lesson.

Another reason that China cannot engage in a major military operation is because they realize that ninety percent of their population can be wiped out with a few well placed nukes. Beijing, Shanghai, a few more, and they would be decimated. Thus, they are concentrating on non-military ways of laying low the US.
