H.R. 163
Any word on the status of this bill today? Apparently it is/was to be heard on the floor at 6 p.m. EST. Any C-SPAN observers with details?

October 5, 2004: Rangel Military Draft Bill, H.R. 163 Coming for a Vote!
>
>H.R. 163, which was introduced by Charles Rangel (D-NY) and which >would reinstate the military draft, is unexpectedly coming for a vote on the House floor today.
>
>A rarely used "Suspension" rule is being used by the Republicans to
>swiftly move this bill out of committee without a vote and onto the
>House floor for passage or defeat. Under this rule no amendments >will be offered, a 40-minute debate will be followed by an up or >down vote, at which point it is expected to be defeated.
>
>The Republicans are responding to Kerry's rhetoric that if Bush is
>reelected the draft will be reinstated. Bi-partisan support against
>conscription is needed to snuff out this dangerous flame.
>
>The bill is expected to be on the floor around 6:00 PM Eastern Time.
>
>The best message that can be sent is STRONG bipartisan opposition to the
>draft because the people of this country do not want a draft!!
>
>The Rangel bill contains fundamental flaws that are detrimental to >the situation of conscientious objectors.
>
>Call up your Representative now!!!

the draft since it was proposed by a democrat?

I'd like to see other people's opinions

Personally I wouldn't Charles Rangel is a disgrace to the democratic party for proposing such a fascist bill.

6. Rangel did it to make a point
Because Rangel wanted the Republicans to face the war issue---as their children aren’t the ones going over to Iraq---mostly minorities are.

Rangel stated: “not enough people care when it's some poor kid in the barrio who's being victimized by recruiters."

It was a good point to make but in a not-so-good way.

9. What if the bill passes...
and the Bush campaign totally opposes it I would think that would be a major blow to the Kerry (democratic) campaign because I don't think the majority of the American people are for a draft.
