John Edward's Outs Cheney's daughter as gay on national TV...

Posted on 10/05/2004 9:14:26 PM PDT by njsketch

Did anyone else believe that Edward's had no right to announce to the entire world that Cheney's daughter is gay? No matter if she is out to family and friends, I found it kind of appalling that John Edward's would use this fact about Cheney's family to announce it to the country. Memo to John: SHOVE IT.

is how Cheney had absolutely no response to Edwards after Edwards' response. I was convinced that he'd want to add more to the conversation.

Then again.. it would be logical that Cheney would want to get off of that topic ASAP..

46. He didn't have a response because he agrees with Edwards -
Right before that exchange Cheney clearly said all people deserve to have certain freedoms, meaning he is not in favor of an amendment to ban gay marriage. What else could Cheney possibly say when you agree wholeheartedly with what the other person just said, "me, too?"
He had NO REBUTTAL. Even Cheney couldn't conger up a lie about that one.

58. I agree. I think he actually understands that if an amendment were
passed on this issue, it would be the ONLY amendment specifically designed to exclude a group of people and that, in and of itself, makes it unconstitutional.

Cheney can be such a liar on so many issues, but I am glad that he, albeit subtly, disagrees with Bush on this issue.

9. She out already obviously but it was a low blow
and, to the general public i would suppose, looks really bad. I think the way Dick replied accentuated on the possible negatives in Edwards statement. I think his daughter could've been avoided as an issue on the whole, we already got alot of leverage on our side (i.e. the truth).

Dick pulled out alot more low blows though, but Edwards came right back, especially on voting records, Edwards owned Cheney.

38. She's campaigning for Bush and Cheney so the thing's a non-issue for her
Given that Cheney's daughter is campaigning for a team that would deny her the right to marry either means that the issue is a non-starter for her personally.

Therefore, to bring her up specifically was sort of pointless on the part of Edwards.

13. I just don't think it looked good for Edwards
Of course Cheney, if I recall from what I read here, told GWB (of course, politcally useless) that he doesn't really support the anti-gay tone and legistlation.

It's just fodder than RNC mindfucked people will feed on that do not know any better. Two callers on C-Span's post debate footage spewed off about this and I think it is about the only comment the corporate press can run off with to use against Edwards in this debate. Not every American steps outside of the intellectual void that they are stuck in by paying attention to only domestic press, and certainly many undecided voters skipped this debate.

The soundbites will hurt, just like Kerry's "Global Test" was present in a non-contextual way, this could be easily emulated by the AM radio squeelers.

31. Freep mindset about having a gay child
Edited on Wed Oct-06-04 06:48 AM by LizW
Sure you love her, we just don't want anyone talking openly about her.

Bottom line is, talking about the gay daughter makes the freeps nervous. John Edwards talked about her openly as an acceptable and normal person loved by her mother and father. The freeps get all squirmy with that because it collides with their agenda of hate-mongering against gays.

39. You might have missed the point
The underlying point of Edwards' comment about Cheney's daughter is Sneery O'Scowl's hypocrisy on gay rights. He thinks gays should not be protected from job and/or housing discrimination, and that terrorists should be allowed to use'em as punching bags, even if it includes his own daughter. At least, that's the impression I got.

Mary Cheney has been an out lesbian for years, one who has used her high profile to *actively recruit* GLBT folks into the Republican Party. She also collects a SIX FIGURE SALARY working for the Bush/Cheney reselection campaign, one which has made bashing gays a political game to please the evangelicals.

Mary Cheney is the ultimate, sellout HYPOCRITE and a traitor to the GLBT community. I have absolutely NO sympathy for her or for her family. NONE.

43. Cheney had a press conf. about his daughter right before the RNC
He used the NYC skyline as a backdrop. It was CHENEY who told the news media and all 6 supporters present that Mary is gay. Cheney. Not John Edwards. That's why it was even more hypocritical of him not to have his daughter join him and the rest of the family on the stage at the RNC. He had just had a press conference and yet he still shunned her in front of his base. They saw the press conf., but he didn't want to 'offend' them in person on stage. Hypocrite.

He's not the one who brought up Mary Cheney, it was the moderator who was referring to what Dick Cheney said about his gay daughter. Edwards had nothing to do with this subject and after his brief response, Dick Cheney gave him what seemed to be a heartfelt thanks for Edwards kind words about Mary and his family. The moderator framed the question around her, although she and Cheney avoided saying "gay" for some reason. All Edwards did differently is actually refer to her as "gay," which, in itself, is not shocking or insulting unless you think like a homophobe, which, obviously, Edwards doesn't.

The moderator referred to the gay daughter BEFORE John Edwards touched on the subject. From the transcript:
IFILL: The next question goes to you, Mr. Vice President.

I want to read something you said four years ago at this very setting: "Freedom means freedom for everybody." You said it again recently when you were asked about legalizing same-sex unions. And you used your family's experience as a context for your remarks.

Can you describe then your administration's support for a constitutional ban on same-sex unions?

My response is that John Edwards did "shove it." He skillfully shoved it right down the throats of the self-righteous religious right. The Republicans have been posturing as the "pro marriage" anti-gay party as a way of pandering to the pro-Bush bible babblers, but last night Edwards shrewdly and effectively squelched the notion that the Democrats are the only party harboring gays. After last night's debate the Republicans lost ground as the party of choice for gay bashers, thanks to John Edwards.

49. so was Cheney's comments also inappropriate? After all he
has spoken publically about his daughter being a lesbian?
http://www.nytimes.com/2004/08/30/politics/campaign/30m...
ary Cheney, the daughter and chief campaign manager of Vice President Dick Cheney, had just slipped out of the room at a Davenport, Iowa, town hall meeting last week when her father publicly acknowledged for the first time that she was openly lesbian and that he disagreed with the president's support for an amendment banning same-sex marriage.

and of course Alan Keyes http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1204846/posts
Just when things were getting dull in our favorite US Senate race, Republican Alan Keyes called Vice President Cheney's lesbian daughter a 'selfish hedonist.'

Keyes comments came about Mary Cheney came during an interview Monday night on Sirius Out Q, a New York based satellite radio station that provides 24 hour gay and lesbian programming.

After Keyes said that homosexuality was 'selfsih hedonism,' he was asked whether Mary Cheney was a 'selfish hedonist.'

'Of course she is,' he replied. 'That goes by definition. Of course she is.'

Bush Cheney spokesman Steve Schmidt said that the comment was 'inappropriate.'

If she has been *outed* by herself, her father, Cokie Roberts (http://www.worldhistory.com/wiki/L/Lynne-Cheney.htm Their daughter Mary is an out of the closet lesbian. Until May of 2000 she was the lesbian/gay corporate relations manager for the once-notoriously anti-gay Coors Brewing Co. However in July of 2000 when Lynne was asked by ABC's Cokie Roberts about having a daughter who has "declared she's openly gay," Lynne responded: "Mary has never declared such a thing. ...I have two wonderful daughters. I love them very much. They are bright; they are hard-working; they are decent."), and at least one republican senator, then can someone explain to me how Edwards is responsible for *outing* her? Are they claiming that nobody pays any attention to what republicans say?

I felt Edwards bringing that issue up was a tactical error. Let Dick Cheney engage in that issue, lets not give 'em a free pass to wiggle out of it. And that is what Vice President Cheney did.
I want Cheney to engage into it, THEN Edward can hit him because Cheney brought it up.

It has no creditability if we engage that issue. I don't like it but those are the rules of engagement.
