Rivkin to be released

06oct04

CONVICTED insider trader Rene Rivkin will be released from jail tomorrow after serving a faultless 15 days of detention.

The troubled Sydney man had feared he would not be able to handle serving his weekend detentions in one stretch – a condition approved after he attempted suicide last month.
But a NSW Corrective Services spokesman today said 60-year-old Rivkin had passed the time in Long Bay Prison Hospital without a hitch.

"There have been no problems," the spokesman said.

The multi-millionaire former stockbroker was sentenced to nine-months periodic detention after being convicted of insider trading last year.

However, lawyer Greg Walsh had said his client was frightened, distressed and tearful at the prospect of serving the term.

Rivkin would be released between 8.30am and 10am (AEST) tomorrow, the spokesman said.

4. to be fair
and I'm no Rivkin fan but he's actually pretty crook mental health wise - he comes across as kind of funny but that's down to a fairly serious bipolar disorder which helps explain why he "did the crime" he really didn't have a lot to gain with it - a lot to loose though - but was presumably manic at the time

3. The double standard community is not just an Australian problem
If I were a member of the NAACP, I'd start compiling statistics on crimes and punishment in the U.S. Here's where I'm going with this:

Over twenty years ago, only 1 in 5 people invested in the stock market. So white collar crime that involved stock manipulations only stung a small percentage of the people. That number has risen considerably and will continue to rise with privatized Social Security. It already has hurt Americans. The NAACP needs to interview people who have lost their life savings in this last stock debacle and depict them as mugged victims. Show that white collar crimes deserves the same stiff treatment as street crime.

Just a suggestion.
