If Peak Oil is real- should there be government regulation on use?
It seems fairly immoral to use a finite and fairly necessary product for purely entertainment reasons- auto racing, movie fires, etc. or for scads of throwaway plastic items...

or should it ultimately be left to market forces?

1. Here's a better question
While we think we pay about $2/gallon at the pump, how much of our tax revenue is dedicated to ensuring the flow of oil into the United States? How much of our military budget? How much US foreign aid is designed to secure the passage of oil? How much are we REALLY paying for gas if you take those things into account?

I don't think it's a matter where the government should regulate the amount of oil that is used -- but I'd sure like to government to stop subsidizing it. Without those subsidies, other fuels might make financial sense.

2. Ration cards may come back into fashion
I think I better give up my ziploc baggies. Even washing and reusing them may not be good enough now.

3. In the 40's both my mother and father had a car and gas was big
My father did a job that used a car but it was in the low fare type and a women that just had a car was just as low. We also had a pick-up truck for large things my father had to carry around. I think my father ex-changed things. We had the same problem with the meat tickets and I think every one knew our great Dane and saved him tid-bits. Frankly shoes were a larger problem as I did some thing awful to every pair I had and someone had to go with out so they could buy me more. The whole family would really yell at me. The biggest fight was over not pulling the black out curtains. The CG were always calling us.
