I can't fit my shoes under the bed anymore: Great political poetry

A local poet and jazz artist, Thomas, called the Lynn Cullen show in Pittsburgh this week with the following poem that he had written. I thought you guys would appreciate it as much as I did.


I can't fit my shoes under the bed anymore
cuz of all them terrorists and them strange lookin' dudes next door
Can you tell me the color of the state of the alert?
I gotta know that color so I don't get hurt.
I ain't gonna drive and I ain't gonna fly.
I ain't goin' nowhere. I want to survive.
I can't fit my shoes under the bed anymore
cuz of all them terrorists and anarchists and them strange lookin' dudes next door
and the level of my paranoia knows no reduction
and I'm lost in the bushes lookin' for weapons of mass destruction.
I pledge allegiance and I fly the flag
and I scrutinize anybody carrying a bag.
I can't fit my shoes under the bed anymore
cuz of all them terrorists and anarchists and communists and them strange lookin' dudes next door.
Tap all the phones, read all the mail,
if anybody objects throw their ass in jail.
I don't care about justice or its alleged miscarriage
I been up all night worrying about the sanctity of marriage.
And I can't fit my shoes under the bed anymore
cuz of all them terrorists and communists and anarchists and radiologists and proctologists and them strange lookin' dudes next door.
