for more than several years. I've voted for her in every election since she was Mayor in San Francisco, but never again.
She's terrible.

The next war will be for water as California population explodes. She is a forward-thinking person. This is best..in the long run. Don't you see that?
Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., said she was opposed to "the destruction of one of the largest sources of clean drinking water in California.
"In a state that has faced repeated droughts and is desperate for water sources, I believe this would be a terrible mistake," she said in a statement.

7. I agree. The folks wanting to get rid of this 80 year old dam are short |

sighted, imho. I often disagree with Sen. Feinstein, particularly on gun control and corporate largese. However, on this I think it's important to Californa that they keep control over this source of water for at least the near future.

9. with all due respect... |

i recognize the California water problem as a serious problem; complicated by the old bugaboo of unbridled development. we have exactly the same problem here in the town i live in in MA- we have ten years of water left, and the city just authorized sharing that supply with over 400 million-dollar homes built on a barrier island.
kind of like living off acredit card. it catches up to you after a while.
saline conversion? California has a lot of coast...
and in my limited understanding of CA history, there have been water wars going on for 150 years.
sorry, i just can't give Feinstein credit for that "viison" thing here. She buys the myth that all development, particularly residential, is a good thing. If you look at the smart growth studies, large scale residential development is a net loser for communities- you never make back in taxes what you lose in supplying services.

got legislation passed to buy back the redwoods from Pacific Lumber. Co-sponsored legislation to get assault rifles off the streets. She got bill passed last year to insure diversion of Owens Valley water to So. California. She IS the reason we have water for the near future!
edit. Saline plants are a good idea, but we don't want to pay for it.

Hetch Hetchy should be torn down.
It is in a national park and that land belongs to EVERYONE not just rich San Franciscans.

14. the point for me is... |
|
you can't have it both ways, as people have tried to do here in my town. where was she as mayor when SF had it's huge building boom in the 80's.
the fact that she works her butt off to ensure that there is water, and shows little leadership when it comes to really grappling with some of the reasons we have quadrupled the consumption for it over the past 30 years just isn't inspiring to me.
i think some of her psotions- assualt weapons, some of her environmental and consumer positions- are good. she's made some lousy votes on confirming appointments- (Porter Goss is an example) and it isn't like she's a zell or anything. and on the water issue, i have no doubt she has served her constituency well.
all i'm saying is that we need more than bandaids to address the astonishing usage of limited resources. i'd like to hear about her leadership on that.

6. This is the Feinstein of the 'yes' vote on the 1st * tax cut. |
|
Edited on Thu Oct-07-04 10:27 PM by autorank
As a native Californian (now back east), I wonder what the heck this Senator is up to. She voted for the first * tax cut. This was a betrayal of her state, her country, and her party. She comes across as sanctimonious and phlegmatically shrill at the same time. She should retire and let a real Democrat come in. Hetch Hetchy was a monstrosity at the time. It is now an anachronism, just like Sen. Feinstein.

13. The Hetch Hetchy valley that John Muir knew is dead |
|
If they tear out the dam the place will look like a giant bathtub that had the sewer drain back up into it. It would take hundreds of years for the valley to return to anything close to what it was.
It's gone. I agree with Senator Feinstein on this one.
