Poll question: Mural at UC Livermore riddled with TYPOS!
Edited on Fri Oct-08-04 10:53 AM by UdoKier

When I read that the artist was from my former hometown of Miami, I had to laugh, because such sloppiness and inattention to detail is typical of that town, but anyway... Actually, to be fair to Miami, such sloppiness is becoming pretty endemic to the society at large. It's otherwise a very pretty mural, though, IMO.

2. Artistic license to do what?
Prove yourself to be an illiterate ignoramus? And in a library of all places -- sheesh! Artistic license is not some convenient, blanket excuse for sloppiness. These misspellings contribute nothing to the work -- they DETRACT from the work. The artist should offer to redo the mural at her own expense.

she said people in the arts and humanities would register the correct spelling :eyes: and they should have checked it before it was installed. i think eventually she will have no choice but to fix it.

12. She is described as a primitive, "outsider" artist
http://www.maria-alquilar.com/

Alquilar was born in Brooklyn, New York.
Her imagery combines iconography of primitive cultures to depict the paths to enlightenment. Like many primitive, outsider painters, Alquilar began her work after the sudden death of her husband that resulted in the fracture of a strong family structure.
---
In case you're not familiar with the term, outsider artists are those with little or no formal training whose work is imbued with an "outsider's" vision. Who are the outsiders? The poor, disenfranchised, mentally ill, physically challenged, etc. Right now outsider art is very trendy--lots of rich, trendy hollywood folk like to swoop up the latest "discovery." No kidding, those spelling errors probably added to the work's value.

The American Museum of Visionairy Art in Baltimore has more info. http://www.avam.org/stuff/index.html
(BTW, I think Al Gore spoke at the Museum's opening)

Anyway, it's a wonderful little museum with fantastic exhibits.
