I never received very much spam until I registered at classmates.com and then I started getting a lot. I decided to un-register but the process became too involved with all the hoops they wanted me to jump through. So instead of telling them I wanted to quit, I changed my E-Mail address in my profile to another ISP where I don't have an account. Now I don't get as much spam any more and I'm reasonably sure that there is no legitimate recipient at the address I gave them that would be bothered with it either.
