Shut Up! You are stupid for living in that area anyways and it is not the animals fault for showing up at your door since it was his land in the first place. What I have seen happening is that people who live in those areas and get harrased by wild animals end up wanting to kill the animal or probably something worse. You people are pathetic and pussies. If your child or someone in your family gets hurt because they see a bear or another wild animal and scare it, then tough luck if your child or your family members get hurt or die. You shouldn't be there in the first place, and your kid probably did something he/she shouldn't have. Just like in a dog mauling case it is the owner and the child's fault not the animal. Some people think that the black bear is dangerous and that it needs to be taken out in order to "keep people safe." I call these people pussies and should move somewhere else. If you want to live out there then you should already know that you will be living with wild animals. It was the animals home first and this thinking woodspeople have is idiotic and honostly I hope the bear's take them out.

4. I Live In The Woods...
and there's no place else that I'd rather be. I've got animals at my door day and night. I live in the Chippewa National Forest. Most of the animals allow me to live here, not the other way around.

What brought this on???

It sounds like you're making all kinds of assumptions. If you are actually talking about something specific - you should post a link.

9. usually people who choose
to live in the woods like animals?

But--on the other hand--sometimes animals DO get out of hand. I worked at a National Park one summer--and was in the general store one day when a bear came right into the store! He ripped into a vending machine with his claws and tore it right apart! People were terrified--and he had to be shot.

So--there sometimes an animal presents a danger and that has to be taken care of. But if animals do not pose a danger, most people like critters--and if they choose to live out in the woods--they should expect to see critters.

I live on a nature preserve now--and when I cook racoons actually come right up to my glass door and knock on it trying to get in! I don't feed them--because I want them to be able to fend for themselves--but they definitely are attracted by the cooking smells! I love seeing them!!!

animals in their natural habitat and people taking their territory away from them ...

13. mmm-kay
I think black bears are widely distributed in North America and it is perhaps impractical to tell people not to live anywhere a black bear might wander at some point. It is better to educate them in how to handle bear encounters. I've seen plenty and never had an issue with them. Don't feed 'em, don't aggravate 'em...if they are walking through the downtown, call Fish and Wildlife to re-locate them, how hard is that.

Do you know someone who harmed a black bear unfairly? If so, I think you would do best to inform your state wildlife authorities.

Edited on Sun Oct-10-04 05:21 PM by Wcross
What set you off today? If we follow your logic people shouldn't live anywhere because the animals were there first right?
I am a big pussy, I shot and killed a coyote last month. It had been killing livestock in the area- my nieghbor lost a calf to it and it was sniffing around my chicken barn. Of course the food you eat doesn't come from a farm- it comes from the supermarket- right?

17. Sorry but my anger came from watching a program on CNN
it was about this family who got their fridge raided by a black bear and are now trying find a way to allow the hunting of black bears. Why? Because the family decided to live in an area that they knew was inhabited with wild animals and that there is a pretty good probability that you will come in contact with these animals. People seem to think that only they are allowed to inhabit an area. If someone was there before you, and you don't like them then you have the right to kill or hurt whatever is bothering you. That is why I call these people pussies. They have the gall to move to the woods and than shoot an animal which is doing nothing more than it's usual reutine which the family got in the way of. I feel sorry for the animals because they are always the first to be blamed and we never point the finger at ourselves. Look at forest fires. People build house in the woods, house gets caught on fire when forrest fire occurs, forest gets thinned. Now who's fault is it mother nature or the idiot who decided to build his house in the middle of an area he knew had a very high probablity of having forest fires. I rest my case.

18. How about a link.
There was a story on CNN I only caught a glimpse of about black bears reencroaching in suburban areas, which would make it quite a bit different then "people who go out and live in woods." Some how I'm curious how you would act if you caught a black bear in your fridge.

20. I think you clarified it pretty well. I agreed with your first post even
though it did come across a bit strident! :D
I live in the boonies (no bears) and love & appreciate the wildlife too.
And I have encountered black bears in other places (and wolves) but never felt threatened...one time I sat down and cajoled a bear to come over to me & actually petted it. I think there is little chance of being harmed by wild animals if they don't feel threatened - but of course sick or starving critters can be a different kettle of fish, to Bush a metaphor. ;-)

21. So you come yell at us?
Why not post a rational, thoughtful post on the subject instead of ranting and raving like it was something someone here said or did? Had you done that, you probably would have gotten a bunch of people who agreed with you instead of us all deciding that you sound very like a dangerous lunatic yourself.

I rest MY case.

19. I love this post because it reminds me
of when we lived in Florida in the woods. Our neighborhood was amazing because the developer, believe it or not, had gone out of his way to design the neighborhood, and the homes themselves, so that the fewest number of trees (very old, very tall trees) got cut down. Treehuggers like me just loved living there. Well, we got some new neighbors who were always cutting down trees on their property! They kept complaining about trees and about leaves on their cars. Jesus! It broke my heart to see those trees felled. Sickening. They ended up with the only clear-cut property for miles.

But it's the same mindset. I'm such a nature-lover, and I can respect people who don't love it as much as I do; but if you're one of those, then just stay in the concrete jungle and leave the wilder areas to those who know how to respect nature and are willing to learn to live with it.

23. I don't agree with much of your post
The issue is way more complex than you make it. I live in an area that has many deer and mountain lions and much more. I also live in an area where it is almost impossible to have low income housing because of land costs. Some development is needed here which will encroach on some habitat. For the most part, animals and humans live side by side here. The deer are more than annoying but the mountain lions have more than enough to eat with all the deer. About 8 years back, one lion was caught stalking humans and everyone got concerned. The rangers wouldn't tell of much but they tranquilized the lion and moved it to Point Reyes where there is more open habitat.

Much of the bear problem in the campgrounds is because of stupid humans and not storing food properly. Years ago my parents saw a person telling there child to pet a bear. They also saw a parent put a child on a male elephant seal. :eyes: Those are stupid people.

:wtf:?!

I agree with the original poster on one thing-most time it's the stupidity of the humans who should know better that cause accidents and injuries.

25. I was a kid at the time
We were camping and a bear came into the campground. I do remember my parents anger.

As long as were on stupid parents, I saw parents allow their five year old to put a sparkler in his mouth. I was about eight and tried to stop him. Their theory was that he had to learn the hard way. This was the same kid who kicked me in the jaw and chipped my front teeth. The parents said, "boys will be boys." :wtf:

Wow. I will never forget that.
