OMG! Chavez slaps huge export tax on ExxonMobil and others...
He is ending the preferential treatment previous regimes have given to the oil multinationals who exploit Venezuela's natural resources. Now watch to see how long before there is another American sponsored coup attempt on Chavez. Boy, is he sticking up for his people's interests. I wish WE had a president like him.

1. this is interesting to watch.
An elected government with strong anti-capitalist leanings has actually survived for this long. I thought for sure that he would go the way of Allende.

3. Im very
dissapointed that our own Democratic nominee is so bitterly opposed to Chavez. Hopefully a Kerry presidency wont try to undermine his elected government.

13. What's wrong with a guy who wants his countrymen to benefit from
THEIR oil. But then, wasn't this what sealed Mossadegh's fate in Iran and the return of the Shah ?

5. Edit to read:
They are STILL trying.

So far, Chavez has survived at least two OVERT coup attempts financed and planned by USA. The USA Corporatists (bush administration) are funneling $Millions to the primarily rich, white, elite opposition in Venezuela.

12. My question is how long before they lose patience and
go the "other" route that we've used frequently over the years.

21. unrest possibly, suicide maybe, economic no
Unrest because the rich minority won't like being deprived of the ever-increasedness of their profits (they're still making profit though), and in spite of being a minority they do have a lot of economic-, media- and political power. They aren't likely to take this sitting down.

Suicide because whatever the rich may try to get back what they think is rightfully theirs, may in fact succede.

But not economic suicide, since investors don't come up short because of this, while the people now finally may have some decent amount of cash to spend. Supply side economics only improves the economy of the rich (the numbers on 30 years of trickle down clearly show this). Demand side economics improves the economy over all, since most of the money that people spend eventually does end up in the pockets of the rich yet again, but not before improving the lives of the people.

I fear Chavez is seriously flirting with assassination at present. They've tried a military coup, a massive lock-out/strike, and a recall referendum. Enemies made desperate often do stupid things such as resort to violence and destruction. They used force against him, made the economy scream, and then tried using legal means to remove him, and they all failed. I don't see them being much above simply sending in a sniper to cut him down like many others who've stood up for the ones who needed help the most.
