SEAN PENN RIPS 'TEAM AMERICA' CREATORS IN ANGRY MEMO

**Exclusive**

October 6, 2004

To Trey Parker and Matt Stone,

I remember a cordial hello when you guys were beginning to be famous guys around Hollywood at some party. I remember several times getting a few giggles out of your humor. I remember not being bothered as you traded on my name among others to appear witty, above it all, and likeable to your crowd. I never mind being of service, in satire and silliness.

I do mind when anybody who doesn't have a child, doesn't have a child at war, or isn't or won't be in harm's way themselves, is encouraging that there's "no shame in not voting" "if you don't know what you're talking about" (Mr. Stone) without mentioning the shame of not knowing what your talking about, and encouraging people to know. You guys are talented young guys but alas, primarily young guys. It's all well to joke about me or whomever you choose. Not so well, to encourage irresponsibility that will ultimately lead to the disembowelment, mutilation, exploitation, and death of innocent people throughout the world. The vote matters to them. No one's ignorance, indcluding a couple of hip cross-dressers, is an excuse.

All best, and a sincere fuck you,

Sean Penn

P.S. Take this as a personal invitation from me to you (you can ask Dennis Miller along for the ride as well) to escort you on a trip, which I took last Christmas. We'll fly to Amman, Jordan and I'll ride with you in a (?) 12 hours through the Sunni Triangle into Fallujah and Baghdad and I'll show you around. When we return, make all the fun you want.

This is my big beef with "Team America" and the creators of South Park. They seem to think that this is all funny. Well, not to me it isn't, and not to the people who have died, and not to their loved ones. I used to really like South Park, but I'm going to have a hard time watching it knowing that these guys just don't seem to get it. Enough of the whole, "Well, we make fun of everybody," bullshit. War is not funny. Not to the people that have lived through it.

45. the trailers for this film are wretched. even I, a non-south park fan
am surprised at how bad they are. There is just NOTHING GOING ON in the bits. Watching puppets blink is not funny.

Oh, that's right, I don't smoke pot anymore, so what do I know...nevermind.

15. Well, sorry I was quick to the draw there, but
Edited on Sun Oct-10-04 09:14 PM by Downtown Hound
I happened to check my posts and saw the Reply message under that one. I still don't see what that has to do with your original post.

And when you say SP, I assume you're referring to Sean Penn and not South Park. Well, I'd have to disagree with that. I think it makes him seem like he knows what's up. He's been to Iraq and knows that the suffering there isn't something to be made light of, which it seems to me the creators of "Team America" are doing. They seem to think that they can walk some kind of middle line and always come out on top by making fun of both sides. I for one, am sick of that. Bush is a war criminal who has killed thousands of innocent people. I wouldn't want to see an "equal opportunity" satire on Adolf Hitler, and I don't want to see one on George W. Bush. Am I cranky? Yes, but four years of Bush has made me that way. Have I lost some of my sense of humor? Yes. But as I said before, I don't think war is something to be laughed at.

Third, if you're implying that you're the real Sean Penn supporter and we're all a bunch of freepers trying to discredit him, man you are really whacked. I happen to think Sean Penn is quite brilliant and a real human being, much more so than the creators of South Park seem to be.

Edited on Sun Oct-10-04 09:48 PM by SemiCharmedQuark
Who are they to decide who is and is not being self righteous? And they do it in a self-righteous manner. Further, there is NOTHING funny about the deaths of 13-15 thousand Iraqis. Nothing at all.
What would these two rather have? Nobody speak out against Tyranny?

When something is being done that is wrong, we have a duty to say it is wrong. Celebrities have the right too. AND why aren't the conservative celebrities who are speaking up being attacked?

Edited on Sun Oct-10-04 09:54 PM by SemiCharmedQuark
What he does mind is when they make a movie that pokes fun at the destruction caused by THIS administration-thousands of civilian deaths and then further suggests irresponsiblity in that "it doesn't matter". There is nothing funny about that. Further, they ONLY make fun of the liberal celebrities, not one conservative one. So what are they saying? It's ok to speak out unless you happen to be liberal?

43. MASH had many very sober moments in it
Edited on Sun Oct-10-04 10:13 PM by SemiCharmedQuark
Many moments where the question of "why the hell are we here" was brought up. The humor was cynical humor and if anything both the movie and the show were staunchly anti-war. A poor comparison to this movie.

A dead gerbil is hardly comparable to thousands of dead Iraqis.

69. Nobody would be dead at this point if Sparky McBush had done his job....
...of protecting the country prior to 911 instead of colluding with major corporate interests to go to war in the Middle East.

In fact, it is highly probable that Sparky and the boys allowed 911 to happen so that the American people could be whipped up to go to war. The PNACers were looking for "another Pearl Harbor", and I guess they allowed one to happen.

76. What about Americans?
Oh, you mean the ones we DON'T see on the news, because everything is going so great over there?

You mean the coffins we DON'T see on the news because your fearless leader won't let them be photographed? (And when one woman is brave enough to take a picture of them, the right through connections has her fired from her job?)

You mean the funerals we DON'T see on the news because the right-wing controlled media won't show them in order not to hurt geedubya's chances of getting re-annointed?

You mean the casualties of this war, the amputees that are getting unbelievably sub-par treatment at Walter Reed and other facilities like Ft. Stewart Georgia, who are having to fight tooth and nail to see doctor and even get treatment, some having to wait up to six months for an appointment?

You mean the casualties that might not be dead or wounded if your hero/not mine hadn't prematurely ejaculated them into Iraq without proper body armor and armored vehicles?

You must mean the Americans that this administration proves everyday that it doesn't give a fuck about. Those Americans? Yeah, I thought so.

Edited on Sun Oct-10-04 10:20 PM by SemiCharmedQuark
They were nowhere near the number Bush and Blair said.

http://www.albasrah.net/maqalat/english/0904/saddam-graves-fabricated.htm

And of course we need to talk about the Americans, but I was talking about Iraqi CIVILIANS. Civilians are absolutely innocent bystanders. They never signed up for war and they never asked for us to "liberate" them.

That's crap. For the millionth time, Kerry felt that Sadaam was a threat. He felt there was a right way to disarm him and a wrong way. THIS way was the wrong way. He's said that on the last 2 debates, haven't you seen them?

101. No one's debating mass graves......
except that these were the result of the Iranian/Iraqi war. What this administration has done, sucessfully, is twist that fact to make it look like Saddam personally ordered the deaths of these people as part of his bid to maintain power. But, then again, this administration has convinced a large portion of the population to believe Saddam was behind 9/11....

So, what it comes down to for you idiots, after all your lies about weapons of mass destruction, all your lies about Saddam and Al Queda links, all your lies about how the Iraqi people really wanted us to invade their country, is that Saddam was a bad guy? That's really the only excuse you losers have left, after all your other bullshit has proven to be false.

So Saddam killed his people huh? Let's forget about the fact that Uncle Sam didn't care about this all throughout the '80's. Your solution to it is to start a fucking war? How stupid is that? You want to stop the killing of innocent Iraqis by killing thousands of innocent Iraqis? Sounds pretty dumb if you ask me. Iraq is no better off than they were before we invaded, and they're probably a lot worse off. Not that I expect an idiot like you to understand.

53. Hey, Mirrorboy...the television series MASH never made fun of the...
...horrific nature of the Korean War. Your weak attempt to compare MASH to the trash spewed forth by Trey and Matt is laughable at best.

MASH did indeed make fun of the various everyday interpersonal relationships and the bureaucratic nature of the military itself. But they NEVER made fun of the wounded troops being brought in for surgery, or the troops that died before, during, or after surgery was performed. And they certainly let us know what they thought about the futility of war and the seeming inability of countries to resolve their disputes without having to go to war.

Oh, and just in case you missed the connection, MASH was put on the air in September 1972, just as the Vietnam War was starting to wind down and anti-war sentiments were at a record level.

One more point...the criticisms of the results of war voiced in MASH are just as valid now as they were back in the early 1970s. We are currently involved in TWO wars that are completely pointless and without reason.

Got a question for you...who else has attempted to make fun of the wars in the Middle East in the same way attempted by Trey and Matt? It should be a REAL short list, don't you think?

Haven't seen this movie, but thought I read in another post that Sean Penn is a character in the movie - which would be a legit reason for him to speak up (Stone and Parker would be essentially making money off his name)... and if Stone and Parker haven't been to Iraq, Penn's 'tour' would be more first hand experience than they have.

10. I have always respected Sean Penn
I've respected his rightful incredulity that just because somebody is an actor, that their right to privacy is somehow waived, that they should be treated as pieces of meat for a voracious, carniverous, slavering public who never get full.

"How dreary—to be—Somebody!"

Just as they hounded Lady Di to her death. Too bad she never listened to the warning of Swimming With Sharks, but that still doesn't condone her falling prey to parasites.

"How public—like a frog—"

And I truly hope the South Park dudes take him up on his offer.
It'll be like: Dude! Make fun of it then, after you know what the fuck you're talking about.
Dude!

"To tell one’s name—the livelong June—"

Oh, and yer little dog (Dennis Miller) too! :>

"To an admiring Bog!"

---Emily Dickinson
I never cease to admire her sense of knowing what's 'too much' when she refuses the alliterative "to tell one's name--the livelong day"

Beautiful work.

11. I'm sorry, but one doesn't "trade on Sean Penn's name" to appear witty
Seen Penn has never been partiuclarly funny, witty, humourous or otherwise since Spicoli, Dude.

And that PS sounds like BS. Penn is going to risk his ass driving through the Sunni Triangle, escorted or otherwise? No, he wouldn't.

This whole thing stinks.

You can bet whatever you'd like, friend, but I stand by my assertion that Penn, if this statement actually is from him, is throwing out a dare that he knows is so outrageous, he won't have to back it up.

And, no, I'm not in Iraq, but I did my time, thanks, and I risk my life every day I go to work, TYVM. How about you?

I don't know Sean Penn, and have never claimed to. I do know, however, people quite well, and the nature of challenges and likelihoods of them having any veracity given the context they are offered in. It is upon this that my opinion is based.

It is also my opinion that you need to chill, as this is not about you, but rather about the nature of a statement attributed to someone who, to my knowledge, has yet to verify or substantiate it.

Silence is consent and you're awfully silent about those boys, piping up only to attack someone who was defending your honor and reputation (assuming you're a liberal).

'Cause you sure haven't had much to say about the South Park boys.

And? My commentary is limited in this case to what I determined most deserved it.

Silence is consent and you're awfully silent about those boys, piping up only to attack someone who was defending your honor and reputation (assuming you're a liberal).

Silence is consent in asking to search someone's car, but not on a website when trying to trying to impute positions or opinions to me that I do not hold.

And, regardless of political persuasion, no one needs Sean Penn to 'defend' his or her honor, except Sean Penn.

When you stated that you did your time, were you referring to completing a jail sentence, or were you actually in the military at some point in time?

I think it's an agenda too. They want to convince younger people not to vote because they know it will help Bush. They all must love their money too much to come out and say it directly because they don't want to alienate any fans.

Obviously they couldn't give a shit about people getting killed and maimed. I have no respect for people that use their humor to ass-kiss and try to defend and justify injustice.

That book "Attack Poodles" by James Woolcott makes a good point about Dennis Miller. He compared him unfavorably to Bob Hope. The difference between them, he said, is Miller loves to talk about war and killing like it's all great, while Hope never glorified war. He was a loyal Republican and would make lame jokes about the enemy, but never glorified the killing and violence, probably because he visited the guys in the hospitals.

What it isn't, the pair insist, is an attack on Bush and the Republicans.

"It has a lot of messages, but the overall message is really just one of optimism, 'cause when you laugh at s- - - you're just inherently saying, 'People, it's not as f- - -ing dire as you're all making it out to be," Parker says. "That's our point."

We should make a little PSA : 'Please, if you're the kind of person who's going to change your vote based on seeing our movie or seeing Michael Moore's movie, you should not be voting. Please don't vote. Thank you very much.' "

71. Another quote in that NYPost article
"We diss on people like actors, who get on a soapbox and say, 'Let me tell you how it works in Iraq,' cause they don't know f- - -ing s- - -," says Stone. "So that's the last thing we want to do."

Okay, so if they admit to not having a clue about what they're talking about, why did they bother to make a movie, and why are they equating it with Michael Moore's movie (or suggesting that Michael Moore is as clueless as them)?

"We should make a little PSA : 'Please, if you're the kind of person who's going to change your vote based on seeing our movie or seeing Michael Moore's movie, you should not be voting. Please don't vote. Thank you very much.'"

I just get that Stone and Parker are all about ego and not about any real viewpoints... sometimes they say something funny, and other times they just sound like complete idiots. They're like the Nutrasweet of politics. Sounds good in theory, sort of tastes like sugar, but ultimately eats holes in your brain.

That point is when you start comparing F911 to a movie about puppets. Especially badly made puppets that move slower than the six million dollar man. Especially when the movie about puppets is made by people whose most prestigious accomplishment is having produced a cartoon. Especially a cartoon that has a dancing turd in it. I'm going to stop now, because I have just realized there is more material here than I even have the time to expound upon.

I wouldn't be surprised if Penn offered such feelings, but I do think he would be more eloquent with his pen (or keyboard). And I don't think he would make the mistake of using "your" as the conjunction "you're," as this purported letter does ("not knowing what your talking about").

You think Drudge got a hard copy of the letter and had it transcribed online? Hmm. I hadn't thought about that possibility. Still, that's quite a mistake, as one would be reading the word and still spelling it wrong, even in that case.

Ah, I dunno. I'm just a bit suspicious on this one, for some reason. I'm hoping Sean wrote a letter like this, but I'm also hoping that his grammar lives up to his talent level elsewhere. Boy, do I have high expectations of others.

I think I'll go look in the mirror now.

106. Haven't seen Team America yet, but...
I fully plan to.

We must be prepared to take any liberal-bashing since we are fully prepared to dish it out. I figure there are moments that will make me squirm.

Trey Parker and Matt Stone are satirists who rarely let *anyone* escape unscathed. The South Park movie was a blistering and quite funny riff on censorship and free speech. Their takes on homosexuality in that movie and the weekly show skewer gay stereotypes while often making them the sympathetic and caring characters. One version of satire is to simply take something to its own ridiculous conclusion (as in A MODEST PROPOSAL) without letting on that there's any idea of mockery involved and let someone decide for themselves how ludicrous it is.

Perhaps I will change my mind after seeing the movie, but from the descriptions it looks to be a satire of the idea that America *is* the "world police" and apparently the idea of policing the world is to (wrongheadedly) blow up everything in the way.

Apparently it's a satire of overblown Jerry Bruckheimer action movies. I can't wait.

is that unlike the escapism that is their work F. 9/11 is a documentary that is supposed to represent the truth, albeit skewed to Mr. Moore's viewpoint.

Change your vote based on Team America? Nah. Change your vote based on F. 9-11/Upriver/etc.? If you agree or not agree with the film's viewpoint, yes or no. But you will be more informed. You will be able to take that stuff as the truth, or you will look it up. You will vote, atleast.
